Parallel to my Ancients collecting interests I have been collecting Morgan dollars for several years and picked up a lot of advice from the posts here. Some years ago I bought a Morgan in a Pawn shop in a holder and wondered if anyone could explain what the holder is ? Was it something you could buy and drop Morgans in or did a store or grading outfit use them? I would be grateful to know this. Secondly I have some images of the coin and wondered what the opinion was on grading and would it even be worth grading? I have this date by coincidence in a GSA holder with a sticker certifying that it is MS 63 but it does not look as good as this one in the hand but I don't know how the scuffs would affect grading. Grading over here is expensive because I guess they must ship them to the States so if this is only going to grade as UNC then I probably would leave it in the original holder which is quite cool.
Not worth having it graded. I would suppose that this coin would fall in the 62-63 range, given the fairly baggy obverse. Keep it just the way it is.
You beat me to it ..yes Capital plastics have many different holders...from single holders with the plastic screws to multi coin holders. The screws do tend to yellow...but you can buy replacements either plastic or medal. Here's a multi coin holder. You can find all the Capital line on Wizard coin supplies.
Capital plastic holder. Better pics of the obverse may help. Especially out if the holder I’m going to contradict morgandude. I see a frosty coin with no serious hits just luster breaks and thinking a solid 64. I also see the yellow areas and question if it has a little pvc. I’d soak in acetone and if you can piggyback an economy pcgs submission give it a shot.
Many thanks all for your help, I'll try the Acetone @Mainebill and see what happens. This was my first posting on US Coins and a great experience for me.
Yes, that is a Capital Plastics holder for a single coin. They used to sell for $1 each. The coin appears to grade at least MS-63, maybe 64. The all important photo of the obverse is coming up dark on my iPad. The reverse is better, but the obverse is much more important in grading.
I would go with the acetone bath as well, no rubbing the coin. The holder could use a cleaning with just water.
