If this got popular it could go huge even if you don't mean for it to. Ebay competition PCGS/NGC Registry competition Forum competition Coin Management software competition CDN competition All possiblity's being even ground if done right could be a home run one site spot...
I would be very interested. For the last 2 years I have been using Collector's Assistant from Carslile Dev. Corp. It is very poorly written and fails to deliver analytical information in a cohesive manner. Repeated calls to their customer service reps have been futile and updates have failed to improve it. For example, current values are readily available from a variety of auction sources - real world prices - yet they refuse to even recognize the inherent falacy. I am not a software person, however I could give comments and recommendations from a collectors perception. Love your idea!!
Greg, I've done a fair amount of Mac beta testing and I'd be happy to help, especially if you want it to run on a Mac. Private message me and I'll give you contact info. Regards, Bob
I looked at it, pondered it for a while and decided not to buy it. Main reason, they seem to be going (or perhaps gone). Their support is non-existant and though it is one of the better programs out there, IMO, without updates and support it is useless to me. After lots of demo's and searching, I just purchased Exact Change. I will freely admit that it does not have all of the features I want; however, one email confirmed that most of the features are being added. (and the response time was ~3 day's vs. response time from CoinManage is at months and counting..)
gbroke, I think you are definitley onto something. ESPECIALLY in one area. Competing with the set registrys. Lots of people collect high grade coins but don't collect slabs. I love collecting coins, and would love to join a set registry, but I don't want to pay the fees to have them all slabbed. If you could create a set registry without slabbed coins I have a feeling it would be a huge success. The grades would be assigned by the general public. Based on an average.
Not to sound to ignorant on the subject, but: Can you guys brief me on how a 'set registry' is defined? Are they predefined somewhere or do people define their sets? Like I mentioned, one reason I started this project was to see what coins I am missing of a certain type. For example, I have a binder with every mercury dime except its missing 5. My intent was to easily find out which ones are missing from that book without having to look through it. Would this whole book be considered a set? please advise
Sure thing gbroke, A set registry is a site hosted by either TPG (NGC or PCGS) and coins are "rated" on a scale of grade, and availability. Here is a link to PCGS's set registry site: http://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/Composite.aspx?c=1037 Users sign up for a set they collect, and compete for both the highest grade set, and for the most complete set. There are awards handed out but that certainly wouldn't be necessary. NGC also has a set registry, but currently both companies only allow coins slabbed with their brand name into the registrys. I'm not sure how you would figure out how to rate each given grade and take into account the population of each. That would probably be difficult. Unless there would be a way to extract it from NGC, and PCGS pop reports.. He has asked several times for people to PM him. Not the other way around.
Ok, I get that now. But what defines a 'set'? Are there standard 'sets' that are predefined, or is it whatever someone decides to group as a set?
The reason I asked him to PM me is because of my "newness" to collecting and not having as much nowledge as some of you other guys, I wanted to make sure he wanted me to help. I know he had said to pm him if we were interested but I did not want to waiste his time if he did not want my help because of the fact I am not as experienced. I appreciate you pointing out that he had already said that numerous times but I knew that already
No problems there man, I'm sure you know way more than I do, I'm just excited to have any kind of input at all. Wether it's good or not I don't know. But I can try out a new software prior to release, and have some input. I'm sure yours would be appreciated as well.
I really really doubt that I know more than you do. If that were the case then you would know absolutley nothing at all. When I say I am new, I mean I am so new I still have that new car smell I am reading every day and one day i will be to the level of some of the guys on this forum but that is a long time to come
I've sent you a PM regarding testing. I'm a software developer, and though I mainly develop in ASP.NET, I would love to help lend a developer's unique eye for bug-catching. (Sorry QA guys, we do it best) Do you have any form of issue/bug tracking software setup?
Update Hello Everyone. I thought I would give an update about the project. There was an overwhelming response for beta testers and suggestions. After reviewing what I had completed and the similar requests from many people, I decided to take it to the next level. The new revision will be available for testing in 8 weeks. Why so long? For the more technical folks, here is the short answer: I originally wrote it in php and planned on launching it that way after testing and bug fixes. However after truly looking at the flow, options, and overall design, I decided to redo it all in Flash Builder (Flex 4). This allows for a MUCH greater interactive experience and ease of use. So, that's where I am at with it. It is being developed in Flex right now and will be ready for testing in 8 weeks. You should be truly amazed at the rich interactive experience it will offer. Thank you for your patience and I will email all of the beta testers when it is ready. I will send out some sneak peeks to the testers in the weeks to come. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about the project, please message me. -greg p.s.
