The coin is in a flip mark XF CL(clean?) and a not of JJ interestingly the tag doesn’t not that it is a S.

looking at Photo grade I am thinking VF details with cleaned rim damage or ex jewelry.

The thing that gets me is the two sides seem very unevenly woren which really makes me supect it was jewelry at one point . The rim also appears to have the remains of some soldering.

I pick the coin up for near melt years ago so even if it’s just bullion I am happy. Also it’s pre-Civil San Francisco gold and at the right price it is still fun to own . I am toying with the idea of certification since I’ve hear that all pre-33 should be but honestly I like to hold it by the rim from time to time 452A4C76-E8A8-4B4E-A132-65324F423CB7.jpeg A5075207-BD43-4637-BDE0-9F8A95BF1E88.jpeg 71655810-88EF-4615-99B7-2AD667FE1D8B.jpeg 3A04A31E-ABEA-420F-AFC1-955B0310CE84.jpeg

I tend to agree with you: VF details, cleaned, likely ex-jewelry. Still a cool coin for a melt bucket purchase. I don't see any burning need for certification unless you just really want it in a Genuine/Details slab.

Speaking of pre-Civil War S-mint quarter eagles purchased around melt, I adopted this li'l lady some years back. :)

I think XF is far too generous; F-12 would be my bet.

Actually, yeah, it’s closer to F details than VF, let alone XF. But who cares. At melt, it’s a cool pickup.

I think it’s in the F-12, maybe F-15 range. Definitely cleaned and probably a jewelry piece. If you spent the money on grading it will come back lower than XF and only receive a Details. Best to leave it as is and that way you can hold it from time to time.

I’m at vf ex jewelry and rough surfaces. Still a survivor though all57-s gold coins much more common in high grade from the ss Central America
