Lol. It was a good idea, they just got into to many niche things and could have done better designs on a bunch of them. Once you show you cant even do a good Mount Rushmore its time to either fire everyone selecting the designs (which they really need to do anyways) or just call it quits
They need to go back to letting organizations sponsor, market and sell their commemorative coins. They have to pay the US Mint for the costs upfront, and if they don’t make a profit it’s on them. That would cut down on this nonsense. And then the buyers couldn’t complain if the value went down after the program ended because it would be on them, with no one to blame. The designs would be much better too - no BTWs or WCs.
The Olympic program in 1995 and 1996 should serve as a lesson. The public will not support such a large program. The low mintage of the MS coins made them rather pricey today. I don't think this new program will ever happen. They should make one design to honor all the lost men.
Mark my word, the plan will include making a couple of fabricated scarcities that everyone will want to have a full set.
Or better yet Presidential children. They can call it the "Junior" series. I'm just salivating for FDR Jr, JFK Jr and George Bush Jr 50 cent Commemoratives to roll off the press!
Well, that is another 120 coins I won't own next year. I am saving for the remodeled Sponge Bob Square Pants underpants and matching t-shirt and matching night time footsies coming out next year anyway, and it is a very expensive set.

I guess is could be worse. For instance, we could be like Fiji. A commemorative "coin" for everything. https://www.ebay.com/itm/203727602250
