I think I may have the real McCoy here. Sometimes it’s hard to tell mint marks with worn coins, so I’m wanting to get a second opinion. I’m also wondering if there are signs to determine a 1916-D dime’s authenticity. What do you think of my 1916-D Key Date Mercury Dime?

I believe it is worth the expense of sending in to a TPG.

It actually looks like a D. I am not sure but I think it might match an authentic 16-D mintmark position too.

The close-up looks like a D more than an S to me, but it doesn't match the full-coin image. In the full image, the mint mark looks more like an S, but all the other details are different as well.

If these are images provide by a seller, be VERY cautious.

Up close it looks like a D but far away it looks like a S.

Okay, am I crazy for thinking that the two reverse images are two different coins?

Look at the big dark spot/hit on the branch in the top image. It's completely missing on the bottom.

Look at how far the rim has worn down. I can see the bottom of the middle bar of the E on the bottom image. In the top image, it's completely obscured.

Finally, look at the mint mark itself. It's oriented differently in the two images. In the top one, it looks like an S, with the right corner higher than the left. In the bottom, it looks like a D, with the left corner higher.

@h.e.-pennypacker, are these a seller's images, or are they yours? If they're yours, can you please double-check that your close-up is from the same coin as your whole-coin images?

Maybe @h.e.-pennypacker will get back to us.
The full reverse could easily be showing more refraction in the worn areas of the rim. Making the details not show well.

I think it does kind of look like two different coins. These are the seller’s images. Here’s a side by side for reference. Has anything become more clear? There are a lot of similarities, but the E looks a lot different.

    That's the side-by-side I would've made if I had access to my image-editing platform. :)

I think the seller is trying to put something over on potential buyers. Ask some very pointed questions before buying.

Mint mark is below the berry and far from the stem in large image, above the berry and close to the stem in small image. Seller is confused or trying to pull a fast one.

Look at the void in the main stem just above the Mint Mark. It is there in one but not the other.

It looks like a D but it is worn. Even in this condition some Auctions are bringing $500.00 for them raw. Personally I would pass if not in a slab by a reputable grader. It’s just not worth the chance or the hassle to try and get your money back.
