Looking for info and value. Any help is greatly appreciated. Is this just a $20 roman coin? Does the misaligned obverse die make worth more or less?
Hi alurid! That's a nice coin! I don't have the means right now to look into exactly which type it is. Value? Hard to say exactly. Maybe around $75? Off-center strikes on ancient coins are fairly common and detract, not add, value.
It's an as of Tiberius who reigned from AD 14-37. The number of his tribuneships are listed on the reverse (TRIBVN POTEST XXX...) but since it's worn and illegible, it is uncertain if this coin is RIC 53 (XXXVI struck in AD 34-35), RIC 59 (XXXVII struck in AD 35-36) or RIC 65 (XXXIIX struck in AD 36-37).
Unless the off center is CRAZY in which case somebody will probably pay a slight premium for the novelty. But overall you’re right, the more centered the more valuable!
You're welcome. But I should clarify that I am not a dealer and by no means an expert on pricing coins. I just go by what I've seen, and what I personally would be willing to pay.
This VCoins dealer has this coin type in about the same condition priced at $145. So I suspect you would have success valuing it at $100-$125. https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/lo...ius_1437__as__r_caduceus/1625652/Default.aspx
