Flat and shelflike appearance does not make it a Dpubled Die variety.

Machine doubling, the doubled mint mark did not come from a doubled die.

Cleaning coins is a misdemeanor, harshly cleaning them is a felony and stays on your record for life.

Flat and shelf like and no notching or split serifs indicate MD.

Kinda neat. I'd keep it anyways if I ran across it in my change, at least until I found something better.

Just when you think you finally have something, and its not. Durn it! Keep looking and good luck.

    one bit of trivia.

If I recall correctly, 1989 was the year when the US MINT would stop hand punching Mint Marks.
hand punching meaning the MM is 'repunched' separate from the rest of the die.

For simplicity, thus if you think you see Double Die which includes a similar shift in the Mint Mark .... you would then know that would not be possible. So one can think Mechanical Doubling first if you think it's a DD and a MM DD before 1989.

Great Machine Doubling, I would keep it, but not a numismatic item. Welcome to CT
