Ok, you folks know what to do. Guess the hammer price of this 1880 PR 64 PCGS CAC Seated Half. It is a really nice looking coin.
I looked up PCGS guide, which is $1,875. There is one sale in June 2021 for $1,800 (also CAC) and not much else recently (besides a non-CAC NGC for $1,500 in May 2022). A 65 (decently toned / no CAC) sold for $1,980 earlier this year (April). Using all that, I will guess $1,725 (that includes the buyers fee).
I would guess $1860 with buyer fee. I'm kinda surprised to see a Proof with flat areas that don't seem to be fully struck. Especially this late of a date.
I was noticing the flat areas on the obv and rev as well. It looks like circulation wear to these tired eyes. I'm going with $1350.00 because of it.
The present PCGS/CAC Pops are 14 @ $1650 in 64 and 8 @$2690 in 65, for members that are throwing warm silly putty at the window pane. The Bid Boards? I think I will not comment, and skew guesses. I do that, but, I want to be popular, so.....no.
Totally agree with the flat areas. Way too many of them. I agree with the Proof designation, but the grade IMO shouldn't be above 55-58. Nice eye appeal but over graded. $1500 w/BP would be my limit.
It is a beautiful coin. I think it is an average strike. I don’t see any flat spots at all. Remember, GC’s pictures are not the best. In fact I see it as undergraded by today’s standards. It would grade PR 65 in a newer holder. Besides, it is a rare Barber 1880 proof…lol. I say $2225, with buyer’s premium.
I agree it's a beautiful coin. It just does not have the strike I would consider for a proof coin. Looking on CoinFacts it appears this was common for this issue. But there are some better strikes. This is what I would expect for a proof at a minimum. You can see the differences around Liberty's legs, the eagle's head, neck and upper right wing.
