Something a tad older....these coins were 60% AV Mysia/ Kyzikos EL 1/48 Stater struck circa 600/550BC obv: Head of Tunny Fish rev: Quadripatite Incuse Square These tiny coins were probably hourly wage for unskilled labourer The bigshots got paid a EL Stater/ hr.
I doubt hourly wages were a thing before the invention of mechanical clocks. They probably got paid by the day. And I think those electrum coins- even the tiny ones- were worth more than you think. But who knows?
I know my Dad told me that his Grandfather (living in Germany/ circa 1900) never handled any AV 20/ 10/ 5 Mark coins/ unlike in the United States where gold was more common in everyday life. I saw that in 1932 here in Canada/ a skilled carpenter was paid 25 cents an hr. Today its $100+ an hr. In my job/ cutting lawns/ weeding gardens/ trimming hedges/ I charge by the job/ it adds up to me making 1000-1500 a day/ working 14 hr days/ seven days a week. However. I get more work done in a day/ then a crew of 5. Thus, one can make 300K in eight months doing "slave labour" Now, off to do lawns....
@lordmarcovan I'm guessing that this newly acquired treasure will find its way to your Eclectic Box of 100. I would be hard pressed to pick the gem it will replace. I don't envy this decision making. I'll light a candle for you.
The “Box of 100” concept was short-lived and went out the window when I split the collection into World & US (two categories). So now I’m at only 70-some coins in the World category and free for the time being of the dilemma of what to drop when I get to 100 again.
