Hi, I have been collecting coins from British India for 7 years. My goal is to collect all the copper and bronze coins from 1835 to 1947. I try to keep the coins at least vf, but sometimes I buy in worse condition as well. I spent the most on a coin near 30 euros - so it is a budget collection. I would like to share what I was able to get. Some copper and bronze coins are very rare - and they rarely appear at auctions. I do not know what it comes from, because most of them have more than 1,000,000 mintage. First, I will share photos of my collection. And then I will single out rare coins. I also encourage you to share your British India coins. Robert
You have a lot there. At one time I was doing the same thing you are but I gave up on trying to get every coin of every date and ended up selling a lot of them off and just keeping the best examples of each one. Unfortunately I don't have any photos right now.
Mint state coins - nice! 1/4 anna 1880 it was early considered a rare coin until a hoard of this was found - so now i think it maybe scarce, non rare.
It is for this reason that I do not collect rupees and other silver fractions. There are too many variants, varieties. I've only limited myself to 1/2 anna, 1/4, 1/12 and 1/2 pice - there is a lot of it - but I'm slowly finishing collecting. I also have quite a lot of 1 anna and other non-silver coins already. So maybe I'll collect other denominations later
I like series with a clear beginning and end and not an impossible number of coins to get or nothing super rare. But as is often the case I feel like when I was buying these, everyone wanted them, but when I was selling there wasn't a big market.
I like how Victoria remained young on India's coinage. This was struck in the year she died, yet there she is, looking like she did on the Gothic crowns of a few decades earlier.
Agree, some British Indian coins are very rare and hard to get, and when they appear in better states, they sell for thousands of dollars at auctions.
First extremely rare coin from my collection (i I've only seen 3 of these include my own on all auctions archiwum) 1/2 anna 1862 Calcutta mint Reverse type II(wide legend, flat top 1)/Bust A with 4,25-4,5 panels on jabots This combination as far as I know is not referenced most of catalogues (maybe in none)
Sounds like a fun series to collect by date. I do that with a few countries (Germany, Switzerland, Ireland and A few others). They can be challenge but most of the dates are reasonably priced and sometimes you can cherry pick a rare date. Best of luck filling your sets
