Okay, Time to Start the "UGH!" Job

    Just spit-wadding here.

As a collector, for me the jobs of:
-- keeping an up-to-date inventory, and
    -- having organized storage, and
    -- imaging my collection,
    are often back-burner tasks.
(I assume dealers are much better at doing these things.)

Well, today starts the process of correcting my laziness.
Being 80 years old is really forcing me to do this.
If I were to be slabbed today I might have trouble getting an AG-03.

Since I've been working with my small size $1 notes a lot recently, they will be the first to get the "organization" treatment.
And since images will be involved and that takes up a lot of disk space I'll be storing the information offline on sticks.
Storing the physical items is a bit more difficult, thus safe deposit boxes are (and will continue to be) used.

I feel your pain. My inventory needs work as well. If I stopped buying new stuff it would be a lot easier to get caught up.

I hear what you're saying, but, as a 44 yr old with an uncatalogued collection, I'd say f-it if I was your age. Just have fun with what you have. Don't burden yourself with such unnecessary anxiety.

I need to photograph many coins in my collection still. It seems crazy because I have many coins. I keep saying I need to get more organized with my collection, but some how other things always come up first. I will get there slowly. At 60 years old I still have time to get it done. lol

And I've got that much time plus one year, so now I'm not even going to bother thinking about putting it off until 2023... ;)

My paper money and tokens are in Excel with photos. Coins and glass insulators are in Excel with only a few photos. Now I'm starting to identify and photo all the marbles I've collected over the years. Another Excel workbook that should take me well into the winter to complete. Lots of work for whatever you collect, but whoever takes over after you're gone will know exactly what you have.

I know I should organize, record, document, track. But I despise paperwork. If I do paperwork for my hobby, my hobby is adding stress to my life, rather than relieving it.

It might be possible to shift my attitude to "this paperwork is part of my hobby, so it's actually fun" -- no luck so far, though.

I rather enjoy my disorganized semi-cataloged mess.......:)

I picked up a Seagate external 1 terabyte hard drive at CostCo pretty cheap and now use it to store all of my data. It's still at my finger tips and helps separate coins and currency from all of the other stuff I have on my current computer.

I keep a record of all of my coins on an EXCEL spreadsheet. I store it on a thumb drive. My father left me his coin collection (of which my brother got half). My father's collection is in 3 boxes. I have a separate spreadsheet for those. I didn't start collecting coins until I got those my father left me in 2007. I started collecting my coins and storing them in a box by year. I looked at my purchases and I didn't make many purchases at first. However, in 2008 through 2010, I only purchased 1 from the Mint, however, about 2016, I started purchasing like "gang-busters", mainly because it was like a kid in a candy store.. Everything looked good and even this past year I made about 20 purchases from the Mint. I usually buy a 1/10th ounce gold coin each year, but I have augmented it when there were some commemorative coins or sets. 2019 really hit me hard due to Apollo 11. Everything looked good, and I did buy just about everything with reference to Apollo 11. I even got a Canadian Apollo 11 coin. In 2016, I bought the gold dime, Standing Liberty, and Walking Liberty. The gold dime was pot luck. Some poor guy must have had their purchase cancelled. My latest gold purchase is the Bucking Horse Liberty Gold Coin. There's supposed to be a silver version this year. I hope I can get that one.

Forgive me, but that design goes way past 'stupid'. For the life of me, I can't figure out why that one was chosen. I dislike the allegory. Pay no attention to me. I'm beginning to think like Charley......

I take a photo of each coin, token, bill, etc. as I get them. I then put them into their appropriate album. However I never write down what I have, so I don't have any kind of inventory sheet(s). I have a lot of work to do before I'm on the wrong side of the grass!
