As stated never seen this before. Worth anything? Ty it's not raised there just is no ink etc. on that line.
Not a gutter fold, in my opinion. It is an obstruction error. Something was on the paper that prevented the ink from printing. A gutter error would show the two parts on each side of the error, as being "spaced" not simply missing ink. Still a premium as it is a BEP error. @SteveInTampa feed back please.
There should be a fold visible in the paper if a gutter fold. It will even be visible on the back of the note but may not have been in the paper during the first print/printing of the back. A way to easily tell, is to hold another note up to this note to see if the print lines up along the ends of both notes. If it is a gutter fold, as @Mountain Man said, the print on the error note will be spred out the width of the missing print. If it was a print obstruction that caused the error, the print on the end of both notes should match in width or line up.
Look at the OP picture. See the separation in the word RESE RVE? I don't think an obstruction would of caused that. IMHO But I will keep an open mind and see what others think. I'm not saying I'm totally right
This is basically what I and @Mountain Man were getting at. If it is a gutter fold, then the print on the face of the bill will be spread out. It can be easily checked with another bill. Like so: i have several gutterfold notes and one of the things i learned early on in collecting them was if you pull out the fold where it is easily visible, the note won't fit in a small note rigid holder. I even have a couple of butterfly folds that I had to use a large currency rigid holders for.
I couldn't tell you that for certain but seems like I see about the same amount offered for sale. I won't be back near my collection for a couple more weeks but I have examples of both and can post photos then. I will say that some obstructions are quite dramatic.
For clarification, I am talking about the first note shown in this thread. The difference in length between a gutter fold and normal not depends on the width of the fold. Small folds, small difference. Large folds large difference. if you look at the upper right serial number of the OP’s bill you can see that the right side of the 0 is displaced to the right of the fold. If you fold the bill back into the white area you can see a whole 0. This would not happen if it were an obstruction error. This is definitely a gutter fold. Gutter folds do not have to show on both sides of a bill. It all depends when the fold occurred during the printing process. It is possible to have a gutter fold on the first printing that is remedied during the second printing so no fold would show on the front of a bill while showing on the back. Also, if a sheet got folded/ creased during the second printing there would be no gutter fold on the reverse. I don’t know if is just me, but I have never seen a gutter fold on only the third printing. If someone has one of those I sure would like to see it! DISREGARD THE ABOVE…TOTALLY GOT CONFUSED BETWEEN OP’S NOTE AND PADDYMAN’S.
. The O in dollar is what makes me think it is an obstruction. That and the serial number. The prefix on a $5 note is a 2 letter prefix (M for the series, G for the Reserve) if it were a fold you would see 2 halves of the M. It's not there and neither are 2 halves of the O in one, the right side is an L.
I believe it’s a legitimate, genuine gutter fold error. It appears someone has tried to flatten the fold, maybe by ironing or by weighted pressure.
I did compare to other bills, it perfect on the right as far as I can see but left is off by a little and bill is a little shorter on that side, if you line up started right to left. Also, color blind but the line is off white or whiter than the rest of the bill. Edit; Sorry the error note is longer then the reg one, very slightly but noticeable.
I think it is just damaged, and not an error at all. The white part is exactly where the security strip normally is, maybe this has been pulled out or something. It also looks to definitely not be a fold: There is no spacing (as Mountain Man described it) between the inked parts. The first letter of the serial is missing, as is the H in THE above it.
I have never had anything to send in to be graded. Would this be worth the try? Ty all for the info. Was having bad day till I found this lol. My car got a 300-dollar bill for Vaccuum pump thing. I got my first ever ticket in 40 years for speeding in a trap zone. I never speed but failed to see the sign argh! Its funny how a simple It's perfectly flat on line area no roughness or gritty feel smooth.
Even though it shows no crease on back the bill is folded at that line. To clarify it's been folded front bending backwards. If I hold bill, it will bend naturally at that spot bending backwards.
