When if ever have you drastically added onto your collection, for what reason, and by what means if I may ask? Here is what I've done over the past year or so. I virtually liquidated (and still in the process) a 40 year old Sportscard collection. I mostly got rid of my 60's and 70's stuff. Using those funds along with a lucky stock acquisition and sale probably added $15K in value to my total coin collection. This was mainly over a three month period from January-March, 05. Since then I've gone thru buying periods but nothing like that large step in the 1st quarter of 05. Why? Well, would you believe my wife informed me one day that my "Damned Baseball Cards" were taking up too much room, LOL. So I converted them into something which takes up less space and you can always get rid of the (commons) ;D Bone
Bone, I haven't been at coin collecting for too long now, so I haven't done anything like you're inquiring about. If I may ask two questions... You say that you've added a certain amount to your collection this year. Have you added fewer high-end pieces or more volume? Also, how did you go about liquidating your sports cards? I've got a few I wouldn't mind getting rid of as well...probably nothing like you had, but maybe 6 or 7 thousand baseball cards.
I tried to do both with no rhyme-or-reason, LOL. I added a few high-end coins (gold) and then went with increasing the volume of 19th and 20th century silver. I even got a few rolls of Walker's & Franklin halves and Mercury dimes. As far as Sportscards, theu DO ADD UP!!!
Usually I buy one coin at at time and enjoy that process. However, I was planning on going on a spending spree in New York a couple of weekends ago. I was going up for a planned reunion and thought I could spend some pre-party time finishing out my French 20 Gold Franc collection with the coin shops of Manhattan. But the hurricane never changed its course and it built up its strength so I ended up at home listening to the wind howl and playing camp out in the walk in closet with my kids.
A builder I know has a large hoard of coins and he brought me some to buy....I was only able to get some of what little he brought and most of them had PVC and some other problems...but the thing was that most of them were better dates....I gave him a list of what I wanted with my offer....he took the list to a dealer and the dealer said I was ripping him off (he said that with out looking at the coins....) I tried to show how PVC hurt the coins and such so I got them for $200....more than I was offering but it was alright....I got the PVC off some alright but others were too bad...out of the lot I got a 1938-D half in VF (ANACS says F15) a 1897-S Barber Half in G....and some more....I wish he would bring more but I think he still thinks I got too good of deal....maybe I can buy them off his kids someday. But other than that time I mostly buy coins here and there....not in lots--I hope to start sometime and then use what I don't want to sell and buy other coins. Speedy
I have had to cut down my Baseball collection to mainly Irod, Piazza, Bagwell & Puckett and my Hockey to Dafoe, Cujo, Hassk, Beezer & Belfour LOL for much the same reason it was taking over the house, but of course my wife's Red Wings collection is Sacred My coin collection is growing slowly but suerly and in a quiet fashion LOL to be honest she would rather buy me coins than cards my latest buys have been another Morgan for my collection and a Titanium Blue. I have my eye on another 4 or 5 mainly silver and one gold. De Orc
2004 was a big year for me, combining a return to the hobby with some strong opinions about the direction of gold and silver. Ironically, since joining CT my collection has almost ground to a halt except for some bargain silver coin purchases and filling holes in Whitman folders to pass the time. CT made me realize I needed to know more before proceeding. With all of the specialized knowledge required, and the counterfiets, and the overgrading, and the untrustworthy dealers, I'm lucky not to have been burned. I'm currently doing more reading than collecting before starting something new.
I collect circulated world coins by date (and mintmark). I periodically buy a 22lb bag of coins from sellers in Germany. The first bag I bought probably quadrupled the size of my collection for less that $150. I've bought four bags so far. I also occasionally buy a specific lot of coins if I am trying expand or complete a particular series from a particular country. I'm getting to the point on many countries and series, that I have to start looking for particular (harder to find) dates or mm. However, even on the most recent bag I bought I was able to add a few hundred coins to my collection.
well thanks to you guy's and this thread I have just gone out and spent a fortune on 1Lb of mixed world coins so that I can sit and sort them LOL (Cost just on £5/$8.5) ah well who knows might just find something in it De Orc
I have purchased world coins by the pound. From my experience, I always get a lot of coins from Spain in that mix.
For me I can plan value increases in the collection by calculating end of year sales and commision % from those sales. I map out a list of gold coins that need to be in my current collection of the entire series of American Gold Eagles from 1986 to present....and by selection and dealer relationships accquire them. I was lucky enough this year to have won 10K via a lottery ticket and 30% of that went into the gold collection both eagles and Modern Gold Commems. I have ~ 24 remaining coins to complete the Uncirc series thus far. I have also collected all the 1/10th oz Platinum Eagles since 1997 both uncirc and proof...I forsee another 5K going in this Jan06 30% of the anticipated bonus to add key date 1oz AGE to finalize the collection. I cataloged my world coins I got out of a local dealers nickel box when I was a kid. I also added coins and notes from my brother’s world travel when he was in the navy and a few notes from my father’s note horde. That made for over 150+ items but little value. Other than that I’ve been sticking to my meager budget.
That is very true. Sometimes I get a bunch of spain, sometimes I get a WHOLE BUNCH of spain, but spain is always a heavy coutry. As a result I do not have many holes in my spanish collection. My household also has numerous spanish coins to use as TV/chore coins, art projects, and as a replacement for sandbags to put in the trunk when it snows. My eyes have also become very good at recognizing dates inside those little stars!
To many years of collecting I am a habitual collector of to many things and just can't stop. I've been a coin collector for about 60 years. At times I've gotten tired of some of the stuff and sold it and later was really sorry about that. I've been on the PCGS weg site with about 25 giveaways in the last few years to help reduce the volume of coins. However, I go to all the coin shows and around here there are coin shows almost every weekend. There are coin dealers at flea markets, hobby shops and even in large department stores. I just can't resist buying a new coin when I see one I like and they are everywhere. This coin collecting thing is like walking past a movie theater and the smell of the pop corn makes you want to just go in to buy the pop corn and the heck with the movie. As to wives nagging about getting rid of excess stuff, there is always the possibility of getting rid of the nagging wife. I miss mine now.
whenever I can, for no other reason than sometimes I can , and usually by buying rolls on ebay. I love the look of a roll of BU Morgans. even if they're 1921's.
Coins Hello Well nowadays i have not been able collect many coins as i have no time in this hobby anymore and maybe i have lost a little interest But i have two huge boxes of coins of my country going back to 18th and 19th century and also coins from other countries as well It is literally my treasure and i will never sell those coins
I sold all my peripheral coins (Lincoln collection, silver dollars, odd coins) in order to concentrate on my Type Set which I had started when I was a teenager a zillion years ago. I spent approx $150,000 the past two years but finally finished. I still bought every specimen "one coin at a time" rather than buying another collection. The fun is collecting the individual coin...I am now thinking of building a set of Standing Liberty Quarters in Uncirculated condition. I've always admired the artistry of that coin.
I have a problem. I think the coins that you guys exhibit here, and the historical stories you relate, are really interesting. Some of these coins are truly beautiful. So, what's the problem? For what ever reason, I have lost any semblance of a "collector's" mentality. I used to have really nice rock and mineral collections. I basically gave most of the specimens away or tossed them out. I probably have thousands of world coins, mostly worthless, but some pretty good. I just can't muster the enthusiam or energy to do anything with them. For whatever reason, I am perfectly content to religiously examine your stuff and read the stories. I feel a bit like a non-believer amidst a bunch of new-born Christians. Signed, confused in Placerville.
Beautiful. Perhaps what I should do is go through my stuff and pick out a few coins for "show and tell". That's how they handle kindergarteners. Some of the hardcore coin guys can beat me up a bit for having the audacity to show such worthless poop. I have no idea what is worthy of exhibition, but maybe I'll give it a try. -
