hello i know this is a very looked for penny and mistaken for machine doubling.but the 5 has a clear 5 on the right side of all of the 5 and the other 5 has it also along with the tail in the 9.also in god we trust a lot of the letters have slight doubled marks on the right and on the tips. 1031091543.jpg

1862csa1.jpg look at the last 5 wich is most obvious.most machine 55s have only portion of lower 5 this has the whole five even the tip on the line that goes across the top another line sticking out of it.i really think its a doubled die not machine.but not a extreme case

maybe mine is just a really good or bad machine doubling.the last 5 is pretty severe doubled but the rest are only slightly outlined on themselves

Yep! It is a "poor man's" double die. Extremely common and nearly worthless.

I have a ton of those, they might be worth something someday.

Doesn't that sound just a little like an oxymoron? You and most every other Lincoln collector has a bunch of them. Therefore, they will never be worth much.

They are evrywhere all the time - you can't sling a cat and not hit a 1955 struck with worn out dies. They are not a die variety, they are nothing. Most colletors who manage to get original rolls of these always wish that they wern't so many LDS coins in them and hope for an earlier die state coin. In fact it's not an easy task to find crisp EDS 1955-P cents at all.
Now they are hard to find and you won't ever have "a ton of those".

You won't miss 1955-P DDO-001 when you see it. If you have to wonder you ain't got it.

When you search as many rolls as I do you have a ton of everything ( smile) I currently have 1500 Lincolns in flips from searching rolls everyday for the last 2 years.

I'm semi-retired but when I do work I transport people for the railroad and this job permits me to travel into six different states so everytime I get into a small town I make a point to hit a few local backs. (if it's banker's hours) not to mention my weekly trip to my bank for the usual 25 dollar box.

Onetime in Amish country I bought ten in rolls and two of the rolls were nothing but wheats.

I have also noticed there is different degrees of what is considered PMDD. Some are easy to spot and there is a perfect silhouette of an extra 5 beside the last 5 in the date and some are not so easy to spot and are faded.

I have also spent all but 2,000 dollars on eBay this year alone buying the infamous "unsearched" rolls and being semi-retired affords me the time to focus on my hobby so, I thinks it's safe to say I have a ton of almost everything Lincoln so far with the exception of the 1909 S VDB, the 1914 D, The 1931 S and the 1922 NO D. Everything else I have in Multitudes four times over.

More then once I have hit what I call " Veins" in rolls where half of a roll will be BU Wheats that havn't been touched in 40-50 years and look like they were just minted.
You would be surprised what has just been sitting around in some old vault in a bank the resembles a Bonnie and Clyde movie set in some of the old small towns I've been through.

Your on the right tract. Your doing what many of us do and enjoy. Culitivate those relationships at your local banks and credit unions so they may call you when they get stuff in. Also with other dealers or at shows and you can over time start getting this stuff (wheats) much cheaper.
Don't pass out memorial rolls if BU either, lots of treasure in those and the gems are way undertated when EDS. Start a roll collection of these when very choice - it will pay 10x over in the long run!

I bought a roll of BU's off eBay(20 bucks) and searched them this past Monday I think. ( memory issues ). Eight were RPM and all were in Gem condition. Supposedly they were in original bank rolls stamped " Bankers Trust Co." which it was but the gray paper sure didn't seem that old.

    Oh, they were 1955 D's ,all 50.
