I know Greenland has coins struck in the 2010's (I assume by Denmark).
Anyone know if they circulate in Greenland?
The wife and I are doing a cruise that will include Greenland.

I'm wondering if I'll be able to get any from circulation?

Or are their coins just a way for them to make money?

The Danish Krone currently circulates in Greenland, according to this article (an interesting footnote on that page claims that the Greenland Parliament rejected a national currency in 2009). I once looked for Greenlandic coins myself and found none but the Danish ones issued in the 1920s through the 1940s.

The coins struck in 2010 were "fantasy" and "unofficial" coins; if only they were the real thing. I'll be curious to hear if you run across any while visiting.

    This site
provides more information about the 2010 coins (and Greenlandic coinage in general), and says:

"Recently, private companies have produced fantasy coinage in the name of Greenland that are often marketed as “patterns” and found for sale on Internet auction websites such as eBay. Not officially sanctioned by either the Greenland or Denmark governments, these should be qualified as medals."

That sounds like a great cruise. I've always wanted to visit Greenland (I can find no one else who does, unfortunately). Please give us a report on the coinage when you return and anything else interesting you come across. It's a fascinating country.

I want to go to Greenland too. Tough place to get to if you fly.
