Let's start with the dime; it's just an MS62, but has a great look, imo: The quarter just arrived yesterday, sorry about the sticker gunk on the reverse (any ideas about getting that sticky stuff off without melting the plastic?) It's AU58, I really like the color. Last, and probably my least favorite, is the Half. It has a sort of creamy luster on the obv, and no surprises. PCGS MS63, but I wish now that I had found a nice AU58. That was in my early collecting days when I wasn't aware of the variety of surface appearances on MS coins. Oh well, it'll do for now.
Yes. believe it or not peanut butter works very well. If it doesn't completely take it off there's a product called Goo Gone that works every time.
Very nice set, I think I like your quarter the best. Well done. I love Barber type sets. I consider the Lib Nickel part of the set as well, but most folks don't so that's cool. Hope you don't mind another type set in your thread, here are a few of my favorties of each denomination: Anyone else have a Barber type set??
just apply it to a paper towel or something directly, then clean it off the slab... dont squirt the liquid right on the slab or you'll make a mess and there's a chance some of the liquid could migrate to the seams of the slab and get inside and potentially damage your coin. remember slabs are air or water tight so don't go crazy with it. but yeah, it works great at getting all of those darn dealer stickers off of my slabs!!!!!!
Thanks for the comments on my coins, and all the suggestions on goo removal. Here's what I wound up doing: since the products suggested so far seemed to have an oily component, and I remember removing road tar with mineral oil, I sprayed some WD40 onto a soft cotton pad, and Voila! Goo-R-Gone! I am glad to hear the 'creamy' luster is not that unusual on MS Barber Halves. I really didn't know what to make of mine, and showed it to Eugene Bruder last year at a local show, who confirmed that the surfaces were original. I still wish I had found a nice flashy AU58 first... but oh well. I can still enjoy illini's magnificent 1909 set vicariously, thanks to the internet and digital imaging. It's all good!
My golly, great pics. Have to go and have a cigarette after seeing those and I don't even smoke. I'm going after a lot of different sets right now, but those are not it. I will someday.
