1951 Cent - Any Ideas what this is?

I've seen this effect on a few coins (mostly nickels and cents). Can someone tell me what causes this? It doesn't appear to be altered after minting. It like the coin was not fitted at all in a collar. The edges seem to be folded in. and all the details seem "smushed" and thicker lettering than normal. Any ideas are appreciated.

Appears to be "spooned". Tapped around the rim.

Thanks. After your post, I did some research and found the following CONECA article: ->Article on Spooning <- Love this forum! Sorry I've been away so long...

Although even the author of the article sounds unsure of the origin of such coins...

It appears to have been stuck inside a washing machine for a long period of time.
