Interesting. Some kind of weird planchet lamination.

It's copper plated so I know a few members will state.. "Copper plated zinc planchets can't have laminations" :hilarious:

If it's something at the interface between the copper plating and zinc, then I would classify it as a plating defect. If it's something within the zinc, then it would be a lamination

Laminations can still occur in zinc blanks but are a lot less likely. The old copper planchets are an alloy of copper and zinc, so there are opportunities for the alloy to not mix properly. The zinc cent isn't alloyed with other metals, so that source of laminations is eliminated. There is still a possibility of contamination or temperature issues, but those are less likely.

I can't tell if the OP has a plating defect or lamination

Too me it looks like a strike thru the forced the copper plating to split.

Very nice example. I think that is the largest I've seen. Congrats.

There does seem to be a recessed area on the top of the head which would lead me to believe it is struck through as well as a plating disturbance/planchet flaw.

Can you tell if there is any plating under the anomaly?
