Is this a legitimate complaint?

I recently cut someone a break on ebay, and sold them 3 sets of coins, for 100 dollars, and I paid over 10 in shipping. The three items are listed below.

He just emailed me, and says there are tons of problems with the coins, but only gives 2, and I personally looked these over before sending them out. I don't know what to think.

If you have a return take them back and sell them again....since the coins are raw I would wonder what he might have done to them...

That worries me too. Also, he is complaining about 2 of the coins conditions, but I made no claim to the condition of any individual coins.

 

What were his complaints? You don't have a stated return policy, so he doesn't really have a leg to stand on.

He said one 1910-s was a 1916-s (it wasn't), and also that a 1915-d was pitted. He said a 30 dollar refund would satisfy him, but I think based on the coins he got, he got a good deal....

 

I wouldn't.....tell him that when the coins left you they were fine....ask him why you should when you don't have a return and when you are a collector and would have seen something like that...

A $30 return nothing.....most of the time I would return something for someone but most of the item I sell go to people I know and trust...so I don't have problems...this is one thing that ebay sellers have to work with....

I would tell him "sorry all sales are final." You should also put him on your blocked bidder list.

I'm worried about negative feedback. : ( I only have 81 positive, and would like to keep 100% feedback, especially since mine isn't high yet, and would be lowered to below 99% from one negative. I'm in a precarious situation.

 

I don't sell but I have 1 bad FB...the reason....a bid and won a book...the guy never emailed...I waited 3 months and left bad FB...he comes and says I didn't pay...I told him that I couldn't because he never emailed---so he said that the books had gotten wet and that is why he didn't email but to make it right I could pick out 2 more books for the same price...I sent him a note with the 2 books I wanted listed and never heard back....don't worry about the bad FB...everyone gets them and almost everyone knows when it is a jerk just out to give bad FB.

As the seller, you shouldn't give feedback untill you have received feedback. I agree with Speedy that you shouldn't worry about a neg from just one person. You can't please everybody.

I suppose not, but if he leaves three negatives, then I'll have a pretty low rating ~ 95%, and people may simply ignore my auctions.

 

You can always get a new user name and start all over.

Your feedback rating would only go down to 98.8%, as the rating is based on number of members, not number of transactions.

It looks to me like this guy is trying to extort $30 from you. Tell him that normally all sales are final, but you will offer to refund his purchase price (less S/H) if he returns them.

If he negs you, make sure you explain your side in the follow-up, for example "offered refund, buyer refused and tried to extort $30 from me".

Whatever you do, don't give in to the extortion.

I don't agree with this comment. I deal quite a bit on eBay (as wheats101) and have always felt feedback ought to be posted by the seller as soon as the buyer pays...the only thing being rated is whether or not the buyer fulfills his side of the deal, which he has once he has paid. Sure, I've been burned a few times but overall the system works pretty well. A few random negs, properly defended, won't scare me away & probably won't lead many other buyers to steer away from your auctions.

I think he means partial refund...

He also said : Thank you, you sent my refund as agreed

It seems like he solicits many refunds, and has left multiple negatives.

 

Looks like this guy is a "pro". I would risk the negs but make sure to respond & point out the other comments so everyone can see his pattern of behavior.

This guy wants a 30 dollar refund (as mentioned before), on coins that were sold for 100-10 ebay and paypal fees, and 10 shipping. If I gave the refund, I would net 50 dollars.

That means he gets 3 1909 vdb's
3 1909 p's
2 1910s
1911 d
2 1912 d's
1914-s
1915-s
1922-d

and a ton of other pennies. I think his offer is laughable Someone offered me 110 for them all, but I declined since they had 0 feedback. I would have rather taken their offer.

 

Do the reverse of what he wants: either a full refund if he sends them back or he has to accept it as it is. 30 dollars is way too much. That's at least 25+% refund that he's demanding. Under eBay terms, I am quite sure that when you aren't able to comprise a deal between the buyer and seller, the buyer HAS to return the items back to the seller and full refund to be made. He has no rights to demand how much partial refund he could ask for - either give or take. But really, if you want to send 30 dollars to cover your ranks, feel free.

But what I could see a possible trend will be that if he left a feedback such as "thanks for your partial refund", you might get buyers who will nag you even till the end even when the buyers got their items in "excellent" conditions.

I guess this is a time when you have to make a risk taking comprise.
