This coin has a bit of a trick as it were, see if you can guess - hint: look closely

Struck over a predecimal sixpence? Whoa, if so!!!

PS- I clicked into this thread thinking that there was no way in the world I could find a 1982 Brit decimal penny interesting in the least. I was wrong.

Aha, Lord M, you hit it on the head.
If you look closely, and it is hard to see on this one, it is struck over a 1953 SIXPENCE! Kind of like a Mike Byers special (LOL).

Only 400,000 but I have dealers wanting to buy it for 500 (ROFL).

How did that happen? And is the penny an off metal strike?

Yes, the penny in 1982 should have been a bronze composition. It is struck on an original GB sixpence from 1953. Somewhere I have one struck on a 1956 6d as well, but this one graded.

    It's an obvious mint sport.

I don't classify these as errors. Overstruck coins use old coins as planchets which is what this is

    Still collectable regardless

Definitely a deliberate man made so called error

Agreed to the obvious, for sure. But perhaps you ought to look at the error coin site hosted by Mike Byers to see what kind of money HE asks for such. As I recall I bought this from either London Coin Auctions, or the defunct Croydon Coin Auctions (from which I got some tremendous coins at times).
