Hi all, I got this lot of MI obsolete banknotes and when i was going through them I couldn't recognize this one banknote. I searched the denomination and year but couldn't find it on eBay as well, if you have any information on it kindly share. Thanks for your time in advance.
Thanks for your input, i actually googled key words "Bank of Pennsylvania $10", "Bank, PA, Philadelphia $10" and even "bank, obsolete, 1847" but none gave me any result close to this scan. Could it be counterfeit/ fake?
Probably have to contact a currency dealer that deals in obsoletes. They may not come on the forum often.
I'm no expert on Currency but could you possibly show better Pics? Remember to click "show full image".
Good morning. My old eyes have a tough time reading the print when the note is sideways. With that said I've found this note in Haxby's Obsolete book vol 4. The note is G100 $10 _________18__: 1830's - 50's. The set of books were published back in 1988. I can't find it in Don Kelly's newer obsolete book. Bank was around 1794-1857 with 5 branches. Columbia, Easton, Lancaster, Pittsburgh and Reading. Haxby listed 2 values Vg - $70 and Vf - $125. Valuations were only a guide and were determined by the authors and specialists of the printing period. Those prices in that book were pretty good. Most of the time you finds $8, 10 15... And as with any other type of collectible - condition is important. Happy searching. Rich BTW - I collect obsoletes from the Albany, NY area.
The Bank of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia had an interesting and somewhat sordid history, from my quick research. Founded in 1793 as a state chartered bank, its closure in 1857 was the catalyst for the financial panic of 1857 that caused a significant run on banks. Purportedly, the relatively recently appointed President of the bank used it as his personal source of funds to cure his financial woes (supposedly misappropriation of over a million dollars for his personal use). Below is a link to a brief history of the Panic of 1857. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct.../21016/20785&usg=AOvVaw3kBOb3UD5Y8IPYrggo_dpX The bank was built in either 1799 or 1800, with architectural design by Benjamin Latrobe using a Greek Revival design. See drawing of what the bank looked like. There are several bills either sold or up for sale that were issued by the Bank of Pennsylvania, ranging from one currently on sale on Ebay and Golden Eagle websites, and a couple that were in Choice or Gem condition in Stacks Bowers auction on April 7, 2022, as Lots 20027 and 20028. Those bills were either 1833 bills (Ebay and Golden Eagle), or in the 1850's in higher denominations (Stacks Bowers lots).
