Now I'm a bit nervous.. 250,000 2-Coin sets isn't going to quell the masses or last more than a couple days in online sales. This is a very very small mintage. This is one personally that I wanted to get 11 sets for nieces and nephews.. I think I'll be lucky getting one for myself <sigh> http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi...=108_cong_public_laws&docid=f:publ464.108.pdf .i.e. SEC. 3. COIN SPECIFICATIONS. (a) DENOMINATIONS.—The Secretary of the Treasury (hereinafter in this Act referred to as the ‘‘Secretary’’) shall mint and issue the following coins: (1) $1 SILVER COINS WITH YOUNGER FRANKLIN IMAGE ON OBVERSE.—Not more than 250,000 $1 coins bearing the designs specified in section 4(a)(2), each of which shall— (A) weigh 26.73 grams; (B) have a diameter of 1.500 inches; and (C) contain 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper. (2) $1 SILVER COINS WITH OLDER FRANKLIN IMAGE ON OBVERSE.—Not more than 250,000 $1 coins bearing the designs specified in section 4(a)(3), each of which shall— (A) weigh 26.73 grams; (B) have a diameter of 1.500 inches; and (C) contain 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper. (b) LEGAL TENDER.—The coins minted under this Act shall
its a total of 500,000 maybe 50,000 each for a set and the rest for individual sales.... But i agree - this is one set NO ONE should miss.
One other thing -- have they decided yet the other commem for the 2006 year??? I have been checking thomas.gov, but havent found anything.....
well it doesn't say 250K unc, 250K proof, it just says 250K of each. I am assuming they will be dropped into 2 coin sets. Either way you look at it, I think i'll have to sit in front of the mint website with a trigger finger. I have heard of a commemorative featuring the anniversary of the San Francisco Mint, but absolutely nothing in concrete.
here are the 4 desings that have been authorized... but the franklin is the only one i know of that has been approved to be used... San Francisco Old Mint Commemorative Coin --- beginning on January 1, 2006, and ending on December 31, 2006 --- Not more than 500,000 $1 coins Benjamin Franklin Commemorative Coin --- beginning January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2006 --- Not more than 250,000 (each of 2 designs)$1 coins Theodore Roosevelt Commemorative Coin --- beginning January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2006 --- Not more than 500,000 $1 coins of each of the two designs Ronald Reagan Commemorative Coin Act --- beginning on January 1, 2006 and ending on December 31, 2006 --- Not more than 500,000 $1 coins
Wow.. well Teddy would be great although he was Born: October 27, 1858 , and Died: January 6, 1919, so I don't get the 2006 significance. He was president in 1906 but i'm at a loss for a significant event in that year? same with Reagan Born: February 6, 1911, Died: June 5, 2004, although that almost sounds like the Presidential Coin series. so i'm banking on the Old Granite Lady
after reading this.. I can't vent much more enthusiasm than a <shrug>, although I HEART TEDDY. What is the Theodore Roosevelt Commemorative Coin Act? Introduced by Rep. Peter T. King of New York, HR 389 requires the Secretary of the Treasury to mint coins to commemorate the 2006 centenary of the bestowal of the Nobel Peace Prize on President Theodore Roosevelt. The bill instructs the Secretary to issue up to one million $1 coins with the image of Theodore Roosevelt. Funds raised through a $10 surcharge on the coins will be earmarked for the development of educational programs and structures, including a visitors center, at the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site. Note that HR 389 is "revenue neutral." The measure will cost the Federal government nothing, all costs of production being included in the price the public pays for the coins. Note also that Federal law requires funds from commemorative coin bills be matched by privately secured funds raised by the group receiving the surcharges, in this case the TRA. All told, between the surcharges and anticipated fundraising for the match, there is a chance here to raise as much as $20 million.
How Many "Will/Can" Be Minted? Maybe someone can confirm or elaborate on this one. When I called the mint early this year about Silver Eagle production I was told by customer services that this was the first year that the mint did not put a limit on the amount of 2005 Eagles to be produced. This suggests to me that the mint is tring to cash in on the collecting craze and may make plans to continue to supply as long as demand dictates a sale. With an estimated 1mil. new collectors a year, because of the startehood quarters, it is concievable that the serious long time collectors many have to scramble to aquire low mintage collectables as the new collectors expand their collecting focus. 250,000 coins may not last long at sale time if this is happening, reguardless of the series.
"Either way you look at it, I think i'll have to sit in front of the mint website with a trigger finger." If it is like the last time I tried, the Mint site did not list the coin I wanted for over an hour after the scheduled release time, then the site locked up for hours.
I thought about getting the Comm's this year but didn't....but since I love the Franklin Half set I might have to get one of the 2006 Franklin Comm....but then again...I guess I could just get a nice Proof Franklin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Speedy
To the best of my knowledge there never has been a mintage limit on ASEs. They produce what they believe they can sell in any given year. But however many they produce they must sell them before Jan. 1 - and melt any leftover coins. Keep in mind - they will start the production of 2006 ASEs next month so the minting of 2005 coins is just about over.
"I thought about getting the Comm's this year but didn't" The Marshall commem's are still for sale by the Mint, so you still have a chance.
Its true that the John Marshall is still available but I ordered mine Sep 23 and yet to receive. I wonder what they're doing??
Prolly just back logged - remember sept 21st is the day they release about 10 new products (popular ones at that) so your order may just be at the bottom of a pile... call them 1-800-872-6468 they should be able to tell you....
