Do early half cents count? Or are they not officially "busts?" And here are some real bona fide "busts"
I picked up 2 bargain busts this last week. An 1806 Draped Bust Quarter (my first) straight graded by ANACS as FR2 - for $98.44. I've always wanted an example of one of these Draped Bust quarters - they didn't make them for long, nor did they make many, Total number of coins minted for the design is 561,045: Draped Bust Quarter Mintages 1796 6,146 1804 6,738 1805 121,394 1806 206,124 1807 220,643 So I'm quite happy with this one for less than $100. I also got a holed 1797 Draped Bust Large Cent (Flowing Hair) for $46 graded by ANACS as AG3 Details (897,510 minted). Anyway, with my budget these were finds I really appreciate, and they will be treasured. (sellers pics)
I have to say that I am really getting into collecting bust halves. The beauty, the strikes, the mis-strikes, the history - just a wonderful series. I see why they are so Popular. Now, being the idiot that finds a challenge to complete a series, I need to think if I want to continue collecting these.
An old purchase but my coin buying is so infrequent that last year I only bought 1 coin. This year's better in that I've gotten 2 but both are small. Anyhow this one (1797 1 dollar, 9x7 stars) was bought raw back around 2015 (below). It's from a major auction firm and was part of a large collection, mostly foreign, but none of it was slabbed. I would have concerns buying a raw small eagle dollar under almost any other circumstances. Since the OP said "A set of Busts, I suppose I have to post another one. This one (1806 1/2 dollar) is also not slabbed but only because I bought it back around 1982, well before slabs were invented. Wasn't planning on selling as they're so hard to come by so why should I slab it? Okay, getting carried away: here's a 3rd one. This is the more common Capped Bust type (1830 1/2 dollar), but then again it cost me all of around $30 circa 1982. Truly getting carried away, but a long long time ago I did get a gripped edge 1797 large cent for face value. Sorry no photo but I should take one as I still have it.
