Hey all. I was digging in the lawn today and pulled this up. It is non-magnetic, appears to have one side featuring someone standing and the other appears to have a portrait. It weighs 1.17 grams. Any ideas on what this can represent? Is this something real? Thanks.
My bet is that it is a token of some kind. No way it is ancient. It has a rim consistent with an upsetting mill.
Figured, this isn't my cup of tea,I don't think it's a Lincoln memorial cent. The reverse looks like some kind of person next to a post @Evan8 seems to be on track.
I agree with this. The piece could be anything especially if this has been found on the east coast. Does look old though.
No chance, sorry. I didn’t think it was actually ancient, I meant real in the sense that it copies a real issue in ancient times. A tourist copy if you will. it may be some religious item. Don’t really know for sure, I can’t decipher the lettering.
Yeah I know. I was just saying that it has an upset rim. How deep was it? It looks like it was underground for a very long time.
Seems like a cool find. Maybe peruse the ancient threads to look for how to clean it so you can try to identify it. There is some good info on how to clean dug coins.
Doesn't mean anything and very unlikely, but the profile of the found piece reminded me of a "Wildman" issue of the German States. It's not exact but, it's what first came to mind. Size is wrong but this is a Pfennig which is 20mm. This is not mine. Photo is from NGC.
Try hitting it with bright light at a very shallow angle. That'll help bring out any relief that remains, like this:
Very interesting connection. I can see that too if I look. However I think the portrait faces the other way. I’ll look some more later. At work now
I would do a cursory cleaning and see if you can bring out more details. Let us know if you find out what it is.
