    Hey,

I don't know if this was already discussed or not but, are there any types of vending machines that take half dollars? I remembered someone here or somewhere saying that post office stamp machines dispensed halves as needed, but in all of the years using a stamp machine (which was over 10 years ago) it would spit out SBAs quarters, dimes, nickels, and I believe, even cents at one time. I have never had a half dispensed from a stamp machine that I remembered, and I asked my dad about it as well, and I don't remember what he said, but I think he said he doesn't remember getting any either.

I know that some slot machines may take halves at casinos, and I know for a fact that most (all?) CoinStar coin return machines do.

Do the coin return machines in banks accept halves? You know, the ones that I've heard about that are supposedly free. :p I might have seen a coin return machine at the bank before, but I was never close enough to the machine to check it out. Maybe next time I'll check. But I don't go to the bank too much anymore. They usually always tell me "We don't have any $2s, halves or $1 coins, and we can't order them either" Now, I hear a LOT of people say "That is not true. The bank must provide YOU the CUSTOMER with whatever denomination you want, that is currently in circulation"

Anyway, one more point I'd like to make, in the form of a question, is, if CoinStar was able to upgrade their machines to accept dollars and halves, can't self checkouts be upgraded to take halves as well? I mean, like I said, the coin slot comfortably fits halves, so, I'm thinking that the company that makes self checkout machines had the idea of accepting halves, so, why can't retailers just have their self checkout dealer come out and add a half dollar tube to each machine? Sure, it would cost "some" money, but I think if these retailers had the self checkout company program their machines to also "dispense" halves (and $2 bills) it would pay off in the long run as a coin denomination larger than the quarter takes off, and a bill slightly larger than the $1 takes off. With in flation, this idea probably is very workable. More workable than $1 coins replacing $1 bills at the moment, obviously.

I haven't seen anything that accepted halves since the slot machines did, but they stopped that almost 20 years ago. The reason nothing accepts them anymore is because halves aren't minted for circulation anymore, so it would be a waste of money for the vending machine companies to retrofit machines to do so.

A friend of mine has a vending machine buisness. NONE of his machines take or dispense baby sized dollars nor the halves. Even newer ones he purchases do not do that.

I've never seen a vending machine that takes halves. I've seen plenty of slot machines that take them, but then I haven't looked in about the last five years.

Postal vending machines and a number of public transit vending machines take small dollars.

They should be able to accept the small dollar coins all the coin mechanisms in the US manufactured since 1979 are supposed to be able to accept them. They don't come from the factory set to accept them though, you have to flip the switches over to the accept mode. Most machines also have a adjustment on the coin slot that has to be set slightly wider to accept them.

all self service checkout that i have been to take dollar coins. Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe's and BJ's wholesale - plus all vending machines in my area take them too. but not halves. My local bank has a free coin counter that takes halves and dollars. but usually i spend the ones i get.

like yesterday Walmart got 60 of them in the machine. they go in very fast. plus the count is always right compared to coinstar machines which i heard is always off in counting. plus coinstar charges yah what 9% for inaccurate counting.
