Attica Owl Patina?

Discussion in 'Ancient Coins' started by vincentsandcoins, Jun 17, 2022.

  1. Can any of you fine ladies and gents provide any input (guesses or otherwise) as to what’s going on below the owl’s belly? To a neophyte like me it looks like a layer of spray paint… obv isn’t but.

    Thanks all and happpppy Friday!

Looks like corrosion, but given the coin has been polished clean, the corrosion looks discoloured.

Corrosion. If you see a paint like substance, it will not be the first time the surface of a coin has been altered by a colored substance - including paint! ;)

I cannot tell much untoward, looks like hornsilver was removed and that was what was left. Extremely common with ancient silver coins. I would have to see the coin in hand or better pic to say anything else.
