Reading last weeks coin world the feds have ordered 2010 dimes but no nickels...as a nickel collector this has busted my bubble as to getting MS nickels ...... as last year they were like hens teeth. Any thoughts about how this will affect our hobby? Last years proof ASE and Unc ASE was a big hit to collectors of said coins myself being one of them.I see just about every day at food stores I service....cleanning out their piggy banks, jars...even saw a lady with a sock full of coins going to the coin star machine. Funny I always want to ask to buy what they have ya never know what they are dumping in the machine ...I had a salesman who did buy about 20 silver dollars from a lady....anyway The fed has plenty of change...with talk about getting rid of the cent and the half dollar and dollar coins are never used in a cash pan.....What next? Any thoughts? What other coin is going to be axed by the fed? will there be years where we as collectors will have holes in our collections due to none being minted?

Well there are a lot of ways to look at this ESPECIALLY when it pertains to coins meant for circulation.

Yes, the 2009 nickels and dimes are hard to come by but really just how "low" are the mintages? IMHO they are nowhere near low - it's just a matter of time before they are released OR the mint starts selling them at face with free shipping. In other words it's a joke.

No nickels in 2010 would suck for collectors just as the lack of 2009 Proof Silver Eagles would. Although I don't collect these coins it really puts a damper on it for those that do.

Many coins are being minted and some of these just "trickle out" into circulation. Stupid premiums are being paid just to have one for a set while millions lie dormant. I"d leave those holes empty until I could get them at face and I DO believe that will happen eventually.

So you collect nickels Paddy? Then take a look at the 1950D and magnify it. People hoarded rolls because they actually WERE a relatively low mintage. That's why a BU coin costs little more than a VG.

Over the years the price has dropped because so many were saved.

Now apply this to modern coinage that isn't really even being circulated or released. Should make the 50D drop look like child's play. A $5 roll of Lincolns (that's what we get at work for a roll of 2010) will drop to 50 cents (what it's worth).

The year is young and I hope they do mint some nickels but remember this. If they produce 75 million, for example, that is not a low mintage. Get yours when you can pay a nickel each like you should. They ARE meant to circulate after all.

Would it really? Is missing a year or two really that much of a disaster? I don't hear collectors of nickels wailing or nashing there teeth because there is no 1922 nickel or horrors two in a row no 32 or 33 nickels either. The world has not come to an end for the dime collectors because those same dates were missing for them as well. If there is no 2010 nickel, the sun will still come up Jan 1, 2011.

I would think what irritates people about mint nonproduction are especially those that collect in albums. It one collects nickels in an album there is no hole for say a 1922. But in the album there are holes for say a 2011. If no 2011 nickels were to made they would be stuck with holes in the album page.

But, it's just a hole in an album. Maybe instead of blaming the mint for doing their job people should blame the makers of albums for trying to see into the future. Circulating coins are made for commerce. The mint isn't making them for collectors who demand a full album.

No missing a year or two would not be the end of the world. However I'm sure the coin collectors of the 1920's were few and far between ...maybe the well to do were ,but the average Joe was not! A nickel was alot of money in those days as the average salery was well under $6 a week! As for the 30's if you have not heard there was a depression....where the average Joe made $0 a week!
But as a collector even thro I don't collect pennies , quarters, and only some halfs and dollars I am sure to voice my opion for others who do collect those series. And I would think that being a part of this forum ,and a collector that you would be more open to those who do!
As for the sun comming up yes I'm quite sure that on Jan 1 2011 the sun will burn bright...but as for the world comming to an end put your money on 12/21/12 !The Mayans have hit most all their predictions right on. In fact I really should not use the word predictions as they had mastered the planets well before a telescope was ever invented.

  8. You just need to take a trip to Puerto Rico. That is where the new nickels and dimes are getting released. TC

    Why so negative Conder?

Considering I don't collect either of the series' I mentioned I really don't care. However, I know what the customers at work want and so many people here on CT want.
For modern collectors I DO think it would suck.

For the record I am not too devastated that business strike Two Cent Pieces were halted after 1872. Made the set MUCH easier for me to complete. ;)

I wasn't too happy about the 2009 ASE Proof not being minted but I got over it and yes, just like other coin series with gaps in it, I'll live on without it. The scarcity of last years, and this years, 5 & 10 cent pieces is a temporary situation that will benefit those who have access to these coins and are selling them for a huge profit. You may not be able to get them now, in change, but rest assured they will eventually be released by the 10s of millions so we all can fill our albums with them. Have patience. Don't waste your $$ just to get a soon to be common coin.

I thought anyone who followed the coin scarcity discussions here would have heard about the Puerto Rico releases of these coins. Paddy, where were you?

Negative? I don't think I was negative. Just pointing out that it doesn't "suck". Sure you might be disappointed for a bit, but it isn't anything unusual. Every or almost every series has holes or gaps in it somewhere. Maybe for whole years, maybe just for a date/mint combination. Frankly I think it makes things a little more interesting in the long run.
