Yep. When my grandparents got me started in collecting, the Mercury dime was one of the first "different and prettier" coins that caught my attention. All theirs were heavily circulated, and one of my first coin-show/shop purchases was a "BU" Merc. It was almost certainly harshly cleaned, but it made ME happy to see those diagonals going all the way across the fasces.
True story. The 42/1 was the second to last Merc I acquired. Bought it from a big dealer advertising in Coin World back in the late '80's. Some years later I had ANACS look at it at a local coin show. They confirmed it was counterfeit. Contacted Coin World and they arranged a full refund several years after the sale. Good job by Coin World, ANACS and the dealer who honored his guarantee. I've yet to replace it but would love to....
A simple, mid grade original circulated Merc is prettier than 93.7% of all other US types in similar condition. (Figure courtesy of NGC (Nice Good Coin)) Of course a Fullbands coin is special. Congratulations on finishing the set. It’s a great feeling of accomplishment. Now you get to venture into the world of upgrades! Rick L.
Congratulations! This is basically what I did. I finished my set with the best I could afford, and as I find one in better condition, (and can afford it) I upgrade, if I feel it's necessary. I collect circulated coins, so I don't mind a worn coin, just want to be able to read the date and mint mark without pushing the limits of my imagination, lol. Great job, proud for you.
Congrats. I got my '16 D in AG back in 1996, not notations as to cost. The 1942/1 I got from a dealer that I knew well that both he & I graded as a VF-30 and best of all: The 1942/1 D I cherried in junk silver. I helped a client dump some silver and our deal was that could keep any dates that I wanted, just swap them out for silver. I found the piece and thought it all matched up with the cherry pickers guide, but showed it to a number of dealers at a local show. Everyone said it wasn't the overdate. NGC slabbed it as a VF-30, I went back & showed one dealer the slab, and his response? "See I told you it was good". I just told him he was full of it.
Congratulations!! I've completed two sets of Mercury dimes over the years but only have one left after selling the other. Completing a set is a great feeling.
I meant that I would like to see the pictures of the completed set. I'm interested to see what coins would be candidates for upgrades.
Here you go....I just realized while taking these photos that I have a 1924 in the 1919 spot....I guess I need to correct that....the extra 1945 S is the Micro S
Wow, nice coins, looks like all are full rims. I would be hard pressed to decide which ones to upgrade but I'm sure you have some ideas. Thanks for sharing.
