Our second son was born in April. For the first I had wanted to get a special coin set or two. Canada makes a set specifically for new babies and I got that, but we're American so I mainly wanted something American too. The U.S. Mint doesn't seem to do anything like this so I got son #1 a silver proof set. I'm wondering if there's any better options for #2? I don't see anything on the Mint website. There's a generic celebration silver ounce that is sold out. Anyone have any good ideas? Reasonable budget here.
There used to be a "Birth Set" but the US Mint dropped it starting this year (no silver and only contained some of the coins from the clad proof set). A silver proof set is likely your best option from the Mint (although these have become pricey at $105). Another possibility is to pick up several bullion coins from around the world. You can include a 2022 Silver Eagle and a few others that you like.
I agree, some other foreign coins might be neat. 2022 is the year of the tiger, there are some cool designs which aren't that pricey.
I’d get #2 the same thing you got #1 - a silver proof set. And maybe an unc or proof ASE of their year of birth.
Yeah I noticed the silver proof set seems to have gone up a lot. I seem to remember it was about $75 when I got one in 2016.
I did have to order the Canadian set again. I mean it has a family of bears on it. I'm the guy with the collection of bear coins.
Congratulations. I have 14 grandkids and 22 great grandkids. There was a time when I purchased 20 mint sets a year, one for each. Then I needed more, and it got too expensive. Now I get the newborns an ASE.
They were $55 in 2019, then $64 in 2020, and spiked to $105 in 2021 (US Mint did large across the board hikes in January of 2021). edit: the 2016 was initially $53.
Maybe it was less than I remember or maybe I had to buy it on eBay. My son was born on Dec. 28 so it made it harder to buy coin sets from that year. Many were already sold out. Even the regular mint set is over $30 now. That's quite a bit seeing as how mint sets have basically no resale value.
Congratulations on your new son. The Limited Edition Silver Proof set would be a nice way to commemorate the birth. Get the American Silver Eagle along with all the other silver proofs. They show very nice. And you could go back and pick one up for the first son too.
My nephew had his 1st child a little over a year ago. He got him the new ASEs and has been been hunting for any '2021' gold or silver coins from around the world (that he likes and can afford) to add to the pile. I got him one of these: Turns out Lenny is a big fan of lions and tigers, so that will give me a little inspiration in the search....
For my grandson, it was a little complicated Father from India and I had massive problems finding a 2019 India coin set...grandmother from Japan, had to get two sets since this was a year with two emperors, from US, simply a proof set.
I've got 3 children (plus their spouse) and 11 grandchildren. It was difficult to decide what to give them. When they were in college, it was money, but now that they are married and have children, it's gotten expensive. This past Christmas, I gave money to my children (to be shared with their spouse) and a crisp $20 bill for the grand children. This past Christmas cost me (and my wife) a bundle. I gave my children $100 and $20 to each of the children. Now that they are finding that special someone, I add them to my list as well. The last time they came up I had a strong talk with them that now that we are retired, I may just send them a card. My son collects baseball cards, so I look for them where they sell them. I'm still a cash for my daughters. None are interested in coins. I learned a few years ago when I gave each an ASE. I guess cash it is.
An ASE or a 'Maple leaf' should suffice. Honkin' hunk of silver and as we all know, ain't nobody anymore born with a silver spoon in their mouth.
For each of my kids I got them a silver proof set and a proof ASE the year they were born. I thought it was something nice but also not outrageously expensive.
I'm definitely thinking of this as a one-time gift, and really I don't know if it's a gift or just something I get in commemoration of their birth for myself. My older son got into coins and baseball cards this year though, and he already said he's going to ask Santa for a coin from Greenland and some 1970s baseball cards. I've created a monster ...
