I was talking with a friend the other day about coins and the subject came up of his mom throwing away a very off center penny she got in change. Apparently she isnt aware coins like that have value. My stomach sank when he told me. Have you told your friends & family if they see odd coins to keep them for you to check out? Have you known someone to do something so horrible like throwing a coin away:rolling:?
I don't throw away any errors that are nice and you can see good of course but I do throw away coins (cents) every week. When you see as many as I do some are ruined and will not go through the coin counter at the bank. I thank god that she did not make so tight that I would re-roll them just to gain a few cents. I also throw away minor mechanical/machine doubling on key looked for dates such as 1970-S and 1969-S even in BU. I do that to keep them out of the hands of people who down the road may try and sell them as true doubled dies. Folks it's only money. a few bucks a month or every six months don't mean a thing to me and it makes me very happy that it don't! I did have a family member that saved me his change or something odd but he is gone now.
I don't throw mine away, but I don't look for all those microscopic errors. My copper cents go in a bucket, and I spend the rest.
Before I knew better, I broke an off ctr strike cent so it would go in a roll. I also tore off a tail from a $5.
