This is a variety I’ve always wanted to own an example of. Over the years when I’d see one up for auction I’d always place a bid with the assumption I’d be outbid. That was again this case this past weekend, however this time I won… Although this one is graded XF45 the doubling is still very visible with the naked eye and I will enjoy opening it until I someday upgrade to an UNC example.
As per the grade, it looks more like a Fine or VF at best to me. Most of the detail is gone from the portrait obverse and from Monticello on the reverse. I am curious, Is this third party graded and by whom?
I kind of thought the same thing. I don’t see much remaining luster, only the slightest bit. Between the outside lettering and the rim.
