    June 7, 421 CE – the Eastern Roman Emperor Theodosius II married Eudocia, daughter of Leontios – professor of rhetoric and philosophy in Athens. Aelia, brought up so far in the traditions of ancient culture, was baptized and got the name Eudocia. She was interested in literature and theology interests. Some of her poems have survived.

    I've been looking for a presentable coin of Theodosius II for a long time. I haven't succeeded. I'm not even sure these are Theodosius II, let alone that my attributions are correct.

    Thessalonica. Bronze, 1.8g. Pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed, star behind head, DN THEODO-SIVS PF AVG. Honorius and Theodosius standing facing, each holding spear and resting hand on shield; GLORIA-ROMA-NORVM; TESA or TESB (RIC 396).
    Found Britain.

    Late Roman bronzes aren’t my main collecting focus, so I don’t own any coins of Theodosius II yet. However, I do have a coin of his father, Arcadius:

    Bronze coin (AE4) minted during the reign of THEODOSIUS II between 425 - 435 A.D. Obv. D.N.THEODOSIVS.P.F.AVG. diad., dr. & cuir. bust right. Rev. No legend. Cross in wreath. RCS #4297. DVM #36 pg.327. A pin sharp & attractive little bronze.

    Bronze Coin (AE 3) minted at Antioch during the reign of ARCADIUS, for his wife, EUDOXIA between 400 – 404 A.D. Obv. AEL.EVDOXIA.AVG. Diad. & dr. bust r.; above, hand holding wreath. Rev. GLORIA.ROMANORVM. EODOXIA enthroned facing; above, hand holding wreath. RCS #4240. RICIX #83 pg.248. DVM #5 pg.326. A little off-center, medium brown, rev. slightly rough with little legend, obv. Has partial legend, BUT an unusually strong portrait for this with plenty of detail.

    Here's an interesting little Theo II you don't see very often:

    Obv: D N THEODOSIVS P F AVG: Draped bust right
    Rev: CONCORDIA AGA: Emperor standing facing, head right, holding cross on globe and standard surmounted by cross; CONS in exergue
    Size: 12mm, 1.1gms
    Ref: RIC 429 (in notes)
