Hi, I am looking for a coin picture from ancient Ninevah depicting Jonah and the great fish. Could anyone provide a link?
Jonah was not a political leader or a member of a political family so he would not likely appear on any coin in ancient times
This is definitely not correct - very sorry. Just have a look at this nice coin showing the story of Noah and and his ark (courtesy of Leu Numismatics) https://www.coinarchives.com/a/openlink.php?l=1724949|3929|1457|96843f85aba71b191278d44fa248e7e3
@Novatian - Sorry, no such coin exists. A few relevant observations: Jonah would have lived ca. 8th century BCE. No ancient coins with pictures of anything were issued that early anywhere. Even in subsequent ancient centuries Ninevah did not issue coins anyway. The coin depicting Noah was issued no less than 20 centuries after Noah would have lived, so it doesn't fit the bill of "proving" anything about Noah. (And yes, I realize Noah and the Flood is a separate issue from the OP question.)
No coins were minted in either Assyria or the Kingdoms of Israel or Judah. Any physical evidence of Jonah would be of an archaeological rather than numismatic nature.
The whale of Der swallows and subsequently gives birth to Oannes,[ i.e.(Jonah) Virtually the same name.], in ancient Babylon, a story which predates the biblical version. This may be what you are looking for. Many of the stories found in the 'Old Testament' are retold stories that date much earlier, including the birth story of Sargon the Great (retold as Moses), and Gilgamesh (retold as Noah ).
Thanks and to the others. There is also Osiris predating Christ together with blood sacrifices amongst pagans before and during Paul the apostle's youth. Not forgetting Mithras. That seemed to be the pattern. Maybe due to a struggle between angels and demons. I am interested in Oannes.
