Last night I was buying a few coins on eBay from the UK (I'm in the U.S.). The coins were 20.99 with 19.83 for shipping. Then just as I was about to pay I looked at the sales tax line: 198.30. What?! How is sales tax five times as much as the total price of the item and shipping? (It seems to be 10 times the shipping cost?) So I quickly back out of there and find the same item from another seller in the UK, and this time the sales tax comes up at a little more than a dollar. I don't know what was wrong with that listing but you have to check everything.
Wow! wonder how that happened? Reminds me of the good old days when there were no added fees on US shipping costs, and sellers would try to sell a $200 item for $10 plus $190 shipping...
I'd like to believe that was a glitch in the sellers calculations. Did you question the seller? I would, just to see what their answer is.
In my experience as an eBay seller sales tax is something I have no control over and no visibility into so I wouldn't expect them to know anything about it. I feel bad for them because they lost a sale because of this thing that likely wasn't their fault.
Send the seller an email and ask for an explanation, and if there was an error. (If you are still interested in the coins, at normal shipping rates.)
I was looking at something and it came in an 8 ounce tube. Priced reasonable with 6.00 shipping. I think I'll buy a few and really get a deal. I stacked them in the shopping cart and they wanted 6.00 per 8 ounce tube. So with 5 it was 30.00 shipping. I messaged the seller but that was his price. With the shipping that high the next seller high price came in lower.
