Back in my days working in a truck stop I bought a few coins here and there from customers. Mostly on the midnight shift - now go figure. Generally from fine people as well. Go to a truck stop in Gary, IN at 3am and you'll know what I'm talking about.

When I became the manager (no longer worked midnights) I came in one day and the midnight guy had bought a fairly complete set of Walkers for 75 cents per coin. I doubled his money immediately and still have the 38-D.

I also got to know one customer that was into paper money. I arranged to meet him in our "laudry room" one afternoon and bought a bunch of web notes from him.

I also used to sell to one of the owner of one trucking company. When you could still get an occasional fresh pack of the old (small head) design five and ten dollar notes I'd buy as much as I could afford at face. He'd buy $100 face for $110.

Looking at a lot of cash is the only thing I miss about that job.

A long time back while I was pumping gas in my car a guy in the car next to me asked me if I would buy him gas for some silver halves and quarters. He knew if he paid directly he would just get face value.

Man, you beat me to the punch with the truck stop. I drove for five years. And no, I don't miss it. :)

Anyhow, every so often I used to see elongated cent machines at truck stops around the country during the short time I was running 48 states. Once in a while, there would be some actual coins (usually at ridiculous prices), but I remember putting a quarter into a bubblegum machine in one out of the way truck stop that had coins in plastic containers. As expected, I got crap (a couple of common wheat cents), but the story fits the thread quite well.

One other place comes to mind. In London, they have a coin show with maybe 20 or so dealers set up every Saturday in one of the lower levels of a car park. While I've bought many, many coins at coin shows, most of them don't take place in parking garages. :) And the prices at this show were at least semi-reasonable, in contrast to what I saw at the shops I ran across in town.

My son was living in jamaica plain, Ma. while he was going to school at Bunker Hill College. We went for pizza next door to his apartment and the owner was talking about a weird roll of nickels he just got from a customer . He accepted them but was not sure he could get rid of them as after he opened them he thought they were fakes. It was a roll of War nickels and I grabbed them for face value. He was happy, I was happier!

I LOVE that show! I've gotten some amazing things in that garage. I have De Orc to thank for introducing me to it.

On a street curb in Atlanta. The Wife and I were there for the Olympics. We started out trading Olympic pins. A crowd gathered and we started trading coins. Got coins from 15-20 countries. None are worth much in value but worth a million in memories of the nice people who let us be part of their lives.

    Mr. Wheatz,
I am not sure if you answered me about needing some wheat cents. I really will give you any dates that I have if you need them.
