I would have it authenticated. Beware of an added mint mark. the Philadelphia coin is quite common. It will make a difference if and when you ever go to sell the coin.
honestly, I don't think it looks genuine. Looks like an added S to me. But that's just from an internet picture.
If altered mintmark, they sure did a bangup job. It looks genuine to me. The size/style/location is correct, wear and surfaces relative to the rest of the coin look good. I'll take it to my dealer for further examination.
another way to do it is to look at the flat surface and try to determine if the mint mark is higher than the star. They should both be relatively the same. If the mint mark is higher, it's almost certainly added.
If you look closely at the date the last digit is a 3. The only year this coin was made that ended in a 3 was 1923. Ergo the coin dates to 1923.
It looks like the MM was added. From your shot angle it seems that the the MM is significantly higher than the stars. Also its in better shape and lacks wear that the rest of the coin has. However if authentic its a nice coin. If not authentic, well you have a nice lil phili
I spent about 30 minutes examining this coin with my 30x loupe, as well as some other low grade pre-25 s mint slqs. I will be the first to admit if I've inadvertently purchased a fake(which I have before); but I do believe this coin is genuine. The "s" mintmark is EVEN in elevation to the star(at least the highest points of each symbol are even). I've looked at it from several different directions with a direct light source and my 30x loupe. I'm not quite sure what is meant by stating that the MM looks "too good" for the wear. It isn't any stronger than my other G/VG or dateless pre-25 s mint SLQs, and those have even more wear. Anyways, I alerted the seller that there was some suspicion regarding this coins authenticity and that I will bring it by the dealer. Thanks for your comments.
Here is a shot of the mm with my camera in front of my 30x loupe. In addition to being of even height, the color and texture of the "s" is consistent with the rest of the coin.
If these facts are true, then congrats! It's a nice key date coin, and I like it! I always have liked it, I just questioned its authenticity.
Thanks Mike. I appreciate the concern given by you and others, and it forced me to dig in deeper in verifying the coin's authenticity.
Looks lust like the one I found in circulation as a youngster and recently sold to a Dallas area dealer for $400.
I suppose I was suspicious just because of the dark circle surrounding the Mint Mark and the Mint Mark being rather strong compared to the wear on the date. But I'm certainly not familiar with the series intricacies to consider my authentication ability as higher than a novice collector of that series. It would be interesting to see how many authenticated 23-s images have the circle. Perhaps it's just an area that tends to collect the dust and turns quickly.
Mintmarks prior to 1990 were hand stamped using a die with a round head. When they hit it a little too hard, that is what happens.
