Sorry for that last post, I'm a new forum member and wanted to add photos of a (CCC?) Ferd 1822 Zs 8R but following the directions I found searching this site said
"1)click on the "post reply" button," OK so far, But...
"2)Scroll down past the text box and find the box entitled "Additional Features"," No such box appears, and the taskbar for Font, Itals, etc also doesn't seem to work. ? Thanks for any help.

Thanks. I now find that I first needed to be approved by forum Admin. Below are photos from a current eBay item of Ferd 1822 Zs listed as "silver." Note large D in IND, hole (cancellation) and scratches (possible purity test?). I checked my Unreal Reales book by Swamperbob et al, but don't have the 2 CDs with complete photos, and understand 1822 at Zs mint was chaotic due to war. Comments?

Usually, on these the coin is OK but the counterstamp is false.

So is the host. If you see one of these that's priced like a genuine issue, buy it! This type of contemporary counterfeit is worth more than the real thing.

As an FYI, copper-nickel will not stick to a magnet, and will have a similar diamagnetism as silver.

I think some countries cupro-nickel production for coinage has a high enough percentage of nickel, which is magnetic, that it will stick to a magnet. US nickels will not, but Canadian nickels will, or at least used to, adhere to magnets. Most of the fake Chinese dollar coins at the flea markets jump onto the magnets though the more recent fakes use a silver copper ally which is not magnetic.

From what I've seen/heard/red MOST contemporary C/F's are worth more than the genuine pieces. o_O

This one finally arrived and I've taken my own photos. It's 25.98 gms.

Bought this 1783 Mexico City, FF 8 Reales on eBay and suspect it is fake due to the weight and edge markings. Any thoughts?

    Welcome to Coin Talk.

Those 1783-dated Mexico 8 reales are often from the wreck of the El Cazador. Many of these have been salvaged since its discovery in the 1980s. Thanks to salt water immersion, many of these are underweight. Almost all of them are dated 1783.

But they have been faked too. And because the salt water-damaged ones have kind of "soft" features and are light in weight, they are especially easy to fake.

Not sure about yours. If it is a fake, it is one of the better-done ones - the edges don't look obviously wrong to me. Others will have different, more expert opinions.

Here is an El Cazador article via Coin Quest - there's lots of info on the web about these (and many for sale):

That’s very helpful, thank you. I do think the surface resembles the shipwreck coins I’ve seen.
