Elephants have around 150,000 muscle units in their trunk. Their trunks are perhaps the most sensitive organ found in any mammal - Asian elephants have been seen to pick up a peanut, shell it, blow the shell out and eat the nut. Elephants use their trunks to suck up water to drink – it can contain up to 8 litres of water. They also use their trunks as a snorkel when swimming. (from WWF) I love animal themed coins and exonumia - especially the older stuff. What about you? Here are just a very few of my favorites. Please share yours! (1931 International Colonial Exposition in France, Asia Pavilion Bronze Medal and 1944 Belgian Congo 50 Francs Silver - Pretoria Mint, South Africa - note the reopening of the uranium mines during WW2 led to some nice lower denomination elephant coins also being minted at the US Mint in Philadelphia for Belgian Congo).
https://www.cointalk.com/threads/post-your-elephants.322181/ Also, here are two of my little pachyderms: Antiochus III silver drachm, 222-187 BC, #SC 1065.6... Antiochus IV / Laodike IV bronze serrate, 175-172 BC, #SC 1477.2b...
Here are my “lions” Griffin (half lion, half eagle): Sphinx (a lioness with the head of a woman): Mountain lion (also known as a cougar, puma, panther, and catamount):
I like elephants... Thailand... Belgium lion... The King of my whole coin collection. Ethiopia lion... no Tigers yet.
Normally, I like coin designs with a lot of detail, but something about the simplicity of that 1944 50 Franc coin that I really enjoy. Just the date and an elephant. Thanks for the post.
Here's a previous thread I posted on elephants: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/who-likes-elephants.388624/ Animal themed coins are one of my main areas of collecting interest. You said you like older ones which narrows it down some. Here's some older coins I have with ferocious felines.
Here's a few other newer ones that I like. The one I only show one side of is from the British Virgin Islands.
