well I was going through my change tin and noticed that one of my pennies had an abnormally deep face this piqued my interest and after going through the rest I found 4 other similiar irregularities from different decades. So it can't be that unusual. I haven't been able to find any information on the errors and so was wondering if you could give me some more input. All errors are on the obverse.

1984 top left appears to have been punched slightly harder.

1973 obviously puched harder on the left hand side. face is flater on the right.

1968 A very deep punch all the way around, also appears to be offset slightly to the right. This is the coin that first caught my attention. I have a second 1968 that appears to exhibit similiar charateristics but is too damaged to make any real comparison.

so I have a few questions.

    Are these really considered errors?
Where can I go to read more about these errors on my own in the future?
    What makes an error rare/valuable?
Is there a place where I can read more about double dies and the like in more layman terms?

Thanks for you input in advance.

Can you post any pictures? Hard to tell from your descriptions, but I do know that Lincolns struck in the 60's and 70's tended to be stronger strikes with much higher relief/detail.

As for the left/right top/bottom strike differences I have no idea.

P.S. Welcome to the forum :D

It's hard to say what you may or may not have without seeing pics of the coins. If you can post pics - I'm sure you'll get some answers.

As to your other questions - if you just take the time to read through the various older posts on the Error Forum here I'm sure you'll find just about everything you want.

thanks I'll get to reading, and in the mean time see if I can't get my old scanner working.

    scanner works

I think lawdogct hit the nail on the head with the 60's and 70's having deeper punches but I got my scanner working and thought I'd show you guys. I found a third 1968 since then and it appears to be offset to the right as well. The uneven stamp on the 73 doesn't scan well, and the new 68 has a partial double rim on the left.
