All damage or PMD, post mint damage as what caused that occurred after it left the mint. Probably in a parking lot.

    Welcome to CT.

A good year, but a hard life for this Lincoln cent. May it bring you good luck.

Possibly had a grease filled die on the final digit of the date. However, with so much PMD (Post Mint Damage) it's difficult to even ascertain that. Lisa, your cent has had a rough life. Put it out of its misery and spend it. ;)

Welcome to CoinTalk Lisa. Hope you enjoy the forum and we can help you in your collecting endeavor.

The cent you posted is what we commonly call a "parking lot" coin, or "road rash" and happened after it left the mint.

I suspect you finding this coin prompted you to join as you were curious about it. Good for you. I hope you will continue to find interesting coins and post them here with your questions.

A few suggestions, if I may. Learn as much as you can about the minting process so you can answer many of your questions about mint errors vs. damage. The mint's web site has many interesting videos.

Also, I have posted this many times in the past, and will do it for you again. Hope it will help.

For the best results, you should post "in focus," FULL IMAGE photos (after you upload your photo, two buttons appear: Thumbnail and Full Image, click Full Image and your photo appears full size on your post and are easily enlarged by clicking on it). Photograph coins on neutral backgrounds like black, grey, or white. Crop out superfluous background so just the coin shows (you can use https://www.remove.bg for free), and post photos with correct orientation so members don't have to turn their computer in some awkward fashion to view it properly. While it isn’t always necessary, it is nice to show both the obverse and reverse, even if your question is just about one side. Members can often give more valuable information having both sides to evaluate. Add close ups of areas you have questions about and make your questions as definitive as possible so we know what you are asking for. And try to have the best lighting possible to show the most favorable photo of the coin. Hope this helps in the future. Good luck.
