I think I may have come across a 1983 penny - double-die obverse. Because I'm new to this, I'm not really sure of what I have. Could someone with experence please have a look... thank you...
My scanner is not very good and I don't have a digital camera but I'll fool around with it and see if I can get a closer image. In the meantime, here's another view of the 's' and 't' in 'trust'.
I've tried what I could to get a closer and better view but the one I posted is the best available to me at this time.
CajunBlu - Not being an error guy it's hard for me to say. Best wait for laz to come along. He should be able to help
call me crazy well I'm extremly new to all of this but one site that I look at... www.pcgs.com/prices, seems to suggest that the double die on the 1983 penny is on the reverse, not the obverse. Also I've seen a picture of the 1983 on ebay. The "S" and "T" in states fade to nothing on the bottom and the "C" and "E" in cent seem to have a little bit of overlap... again on the reverse.
Howdy Fooldumb - Welcome to the Forum !! So far - CONECA has 8 different listings for doubled die obverse varieties and two for doubled die reverse varieties - so both exist. You can read about them by Clicking Here
Looking at your first image, the E in WE and the T in TRUST seem to have the telltale indicators of split serrifs. Hard to say for sure but I'd guess DDO Mike Diamond is another voice of experience to wait for.
I confess that I don't see any doubling. Only some distortion of the letters due to die deterioration.
Hi, I know of at least eight Doubled Die Obverse varieties on 1983 Lincoln cents. I have examples of four of them here. The spreads on the DDOs are very close so it may be tough to see in a scan. I don't see any doubling in the scans here, but these 1983 DDO varieties really need an up close and personal examination with a good loupe. Have Fun, Bill
