Another “guess the hammer” price thread.

Ok, yeah—another “guess the hammer” price for a Morgan Dollar. This one is an unusual one—a toned, high grade CC dollar, that is a better date coin. It is an 1891cc, MS 66 PCGS Sunset Collection pedigree. Ok, here goes. Price is already high.

PCGS says in MS66 it is worth $17,000...
But this is an auction, so no one knows what will happen

The toning doesn't do anything for me - $13500. I feel like I'm playing the price is right....

 

I think this one's gonna sell high. It's got lovely pastel toning and everyone loves CC's. I'm gonna say $21,500 including fees.

$20,000, including the bookmaker’s fees. Toning in CC dollars is far less common than other mints. It probably looks much nicer in person—typical GC Collections mediocre photos. That date, in a high grade will go high. The coin is attractive. No bidding war, as it takes the right buyer.

 

Toning has a peculiar way of hiding flaws, for this reason I limit the premium above a like graded specimen. I'd let this one pass. But hey? To each his own, collect what you like.

Is it just my imagination, or are there suggestions of fingerprints on this coin?

 

pcgs PG for a 67 is 21,000; so will the toning give it a full grade bump in price? Heck if I know but I am going to guess 13,750 w/ premium.

 

15,750 plus fees is my guess....unusual date but the color isn't that special (although that might not stop someone trying to do a complete set of toned Morgans since this one does not show up often).

 

This might throw a curveball into the bidding, but the same coin sold just last year for $5,020.88 in a PCGS MS 65 CAC holder. Someone got the upgrade and will score (if they didn't spend thousands in trying to get the bump) but if other bidders find the prior result, it could make them more hesitant to bid high.

$15,600 just a wild guess, people are starting to cut back in other areas, but maybe it doesn't effect this market segment.

 

Good detective work. I'm tempted to lower my guess.

 

That is great follow-up, @ddddd. The only question is, will bidders do the same research? If they do, any bid over $9000 would be insanity. The coin is valued by PCGS as $17,000 in MS 66.

I'm thinking some will do the research and lower their bids. However, there are others that won't or just want the higher grade for registry purposes.

 

@Morgandude11 Bidder 5 really wants this coin, but another current previous bidder or late entry bidder can jump in at the last minute; I'll guess that it goes for around $13.5 K.
