So, I bought a 2022 W Silver Eagle that was minted at West Point. But, there is "NO" West Point Mint mark on the coin. Is that an error? IMG_0038.JPG IMG_0039.JPG IMG_0040.JPG

The"W" is in parenthesis, so I think that it was Minted in West Point, but doesn't carry the mint mark, bullion issue. I'm not sure, so let's await someone more in the know.

Correct the bullion versions don't have a mint mark even though it was minted at west point, only the proofs do.Philly and the Frisco didn't mint any silver eagles this year so since all the BU versions were at west point no mint mark was needed.

The ones in () have to be submitted in sealed mint boxes to get the mint mark on it.

That’s not really accurate. The uncirculated collector versions have mint marks on them, the reverse proofs etc.

Only the bullion versions don’t have mint marks on them and the bullion versions never have mint marks on them.

As far as where they were made this year, the years still young and they’ve tried to hide what mints made what in the past like when they hid the Philly ones. It’s far too early in the year to say they’re only going to be made at one mint

That's exactly what i said, the uncirculated issues don't have a mint mark.If they did make a philly one then how would you be able to tell the difference?so the philly ones would have a mint mark or are they decided by plastic. Its kind of confusing and more of a magic trick goose chase if so,which is why i don't collect silver eagles.

That’s not what you said though.

The uncirculated issues are collector coins and always have a mint mark. The bullion version is different from those and never has a mint mark no matter where it’s made, it has nothing to do with the mint mark being necessary.

As I said the bullion never have mint marks and have to be submitted in sealed monster boxes from the mint in order to get the () mint mark on the label otherwise it’s just the year. The sealed monster boxes indicate where they were minted even when the mint tries to hide the location as the inventory numbers give it away if someone make a freedom of information act request.

It’s not really that confusing it just gets confusing when wrong information gets posted.

Like others have said, the () means its denoted but not on the coin. They figured our where each case was minted, and have the TPGs mark coins that otherwise have no mintmark as coming from a certain facility. Not sure any long term value or meaning, but it made the submitters some money, as well as the TPGs, so they are happy.

If you look at ASE’s in the Red Book, there were several years with a (W) or (S) or both. By using mint records and labels on shipping boxes, the TPGs were able to determine, in some cases, which mint produced the coins even though there was no mint mark on the coins. At this point, there is no way to know the mint of origin by examining the coins. At some future date, die analysis or metal analysis might make that possible.
