Pretty confident, the copper nickel cents were often mushy as the dies wore quickly from the hard alloy. I once heard they backed the dies off at one point because so many of them broke although I can't verify that. I do know that is one of the reasons they quit using the alloy. Compare with this example from NGC

I tried that for years: no luck. I was in high school and rode a bicycle and went to coin shows but all the old dealers just would cheat me out of my $20 by selling me coins in tight-fitting holders with concealed damage.*

When I'd remove the coin from the holder, see the damage, and try to return it, they'd never take it back: even for $5. I should've just sat at their tables the whole show and cried until they relented.

*This was before the days of slabbing of course. Heck, coins themselves had barely been invented back then...

1928-S Lincoln Cent $8. I got a BU 1955-S which went into my Dansco with it, so let’s call it $7. Shame about the heavy carbon spots as it’s a very strong RB, maybe even close to Red. Still an absolute steal.

Images by Bob Campbell, and I think he did an excellent job.

$46 with free shipping! 1797 Large Cent - holed and slabbed by ANACS as AG3 Details. Mintage 897,510. Red Book in Straight AG price listed as $175-200. I'm going to see if I can figure out the variety - Stem / Stemless, Gripped Edge / Plain Edge. I love a find like this for under $50! (sellers pics)

I'm still a little miffed that ANACS considered themselves too good for holed coins when I had one I wanted graded. (Plugged was OK. I thought about sticking some gum in the hole and sending it in.) Glad to see they've come around; holed coins deserve authentication and preservation, too.

It’s definitely tough to find any 1797 for under 50, and when you do they are usually completely roached. Nice find! Yours is S-136 which is an R-3 variety.

I've been diggin' these Jeffersons lately, and a good thing now that I'm paying hundreds a month more for gas these come easier than SLQ's and Walkers.

A solution would be to save up for 10 months and then buy a Walker instead of a Jeff nickel. Or just 5 months for a Seated Liberty Quarter (SLQ); although a mint state 1853 Arrows & Rays might set you back more than 5 Jeffersons.

Definitely true, and probably the approach I should take, but I am truly loving the tones these Jeffersons take, and I have an addictive personality.
EDIT to add I always thought SLQ was Standing Liberty Quarter and it seems like either version of SLQ's are harder to find deals on than Walkers, even earlier ish Walkers.
