Comments about this would be appreciated! Looks like reed marks from another quarter. Also the marks are clean not scratched up as if forced on?
Your poll question is really interesting, what do you mean by(while still hot)I would advise to read up and learn about the minting process for coins properly.Either way its a damaged coin but still a nice 25 cents.Like Paddy mentioned above it looks like a strike from a shovel.
Coins are not heated in the minting process. Your coin took a hit from the edge of another reeder coin but it’s a good longer hit than most.
I thought it was to long and wide to be from a edge hit. Besides being impacted from an ASE,it's a damaged coin nonetheless though.
It looks like struck through reeding to me. https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-c...e-kennedy-half-dollar-washington-quarter.html
Well, that's not quite true. I think @Collecting Nut meant to say, the coins are not hot when they come out of the stamping press. The planchets are heated to soften them prior to being minted and your coin shows the damage after the coin was minted. Welcome to CT BTW.
Obverse is good but to add the reverse would be better. Welcome to CT, thanks for sharing, and good luck.
IMO this is a mint error caused by a piece of Reeding from a prior coin strike malfunction remaining in the Coining chamber while the Hammer Die came down, resulting in a strike-through, as seen in the Reeding Impression in your Obverse photo; the reference cited by @KBBPLL gives multiple scenarios as to how this may happen.
Think I'm going to stay off the error coins forum for a little while.Just a coincidence how two coins today i was 100% certain damage turns out to be an incredible errorand like I said in another thread why do some error coins also have the appearance of damaged coins!!!!.
Although I agree with the thought of struck thru reeding. It would be good to get this one looked at by an experienced error collector, or authenticated by a Professional.
@Iso808 post a couple more pictures from different angles. Reverse photo also might help. Check the edge for anything unusual.
I’m guessing your right. Someone on eBay might go nuts for one of them kinds. Just explain what it is I guess. I like it. Really different if not done intentionally
