One of my favorite coins in my collection is this Tiberius denarius: I bought it from Dr Martina Dieterle on her VCoins store. Her description is as follows: Tiberius AD 14-37. Denarius (AR; 17-18mm; 3.71g; 12h) Lugdunum AD 16-21. TI CAESAR DIVI - AVGVSTVS Laureate head of Tiberius to right. Rev. PONTIF - MAXIM Female figure seated right, holding long vertical sceptre in right hand and branch in left, on chair with plain legs above double line. Very fine. Corrossion on both sides. Nicely toned. BMCRE I p. 125, 34 and pl. 22.22; C. 16; mt 2008-01 p.135 # 2 (this coin illustrated); RIC I2 p. 95, 26. From the A.K. coll. My question is with the reference: apparently this is a plate coin, but of which reference? BMCRE? What does "C. 16" and "mt 2008-01 p.135 # 2" mean? And if anyone has the reference in which this coin is pictured, could you maybe post a photo of the illustration? Thanks!
Thanks @DonnaML & @Victor_Clark ! Any idea what the "mt . . ." reference is? Or is it part of the BMCRE/Cohen references? The semicolon seems to indicate it's a separate reference work.
If you are stumped that is not a good sign! I just finished emailing my question to Dr. Dieterle, so hopefully I will soon know the answer. I'll post in this thread if/when I hear back. In the meantime if anyone else has anything that might be helpful, feel free to share!
Hi @The Meat man and All, Could it be the Jan 2008 Money Trend issue, page 135, coin #2. Money Trend is a German language coin periodical. - Broucheion
If Dr. Dieterle cited it, she probably has it and can mail or email a copy of the relevant page to you. She did that for me when her citations for a Roman Alexandrian coin I bought from her included a citation to a German catalog I don't have.
Your guess was correct! I heard back from Dr. Dieterle this morning. She confirmed that it was from the January 2008 issue of Money Trend, and she very generously offered to send me a copy. I am looking forward to seeing the illustration. Mystery solved!
