Here’s my 1922 Lincoln Cent missing the D mint mark. In 1922 only Denver minted this date so it should have a D. Extremely worn dies caused a weak or missing mint mark. Three different die pairs were involved, two of which produced the weak D coins. This coin has the strong reverse and that was caused by die pair number 2. That’s the missing D. Only 7,169,000 of this coin was produced and that’s not that many. Subtract all of the D’s and weak D’s and it’s a lot less with a no D. This is one coin that you should never buy unless it’s slabbed by a reputable TPG. There are a number of them that have had the D mint mark removed. Why? Because in G-4 this is a $500 coin, easily. In VF-25, I’ve seen them at just under $2000.00. I’ve had this coin over 25 years, maybe 30 years. It was graded by PCGS and has the old green label. I’m very happy with it and have no plans to resubmit. It will stay just as it is. It was difficult to get decent photos as it’s a darker chocolate brown and being in an older slab made it harder. I had strong light as you can see in the last photo. Those pale white streaks are a reflection.
Nice coin at a VF 25. There were actually 4 die pairs used, 3 of them had the weak D and no D. But only Die pair 2 had the NO D strong reverse. 1922 Weak D and No D Lincoln Cent Varieties (lincolncentresource.com) The fourth pair was nicknamed coat tails because of the way that the jacket merged with the rim details.
I was able to find more information about this coin. Not this particular coin but the date and what caused it. The 1922 No D Lincoln cent is the only circulation strike coin, in the entire Lincoln cent series which lacks its intended mint mark. It is believed that the Denver Mint was receiving extreme pressure as it was the only mint producing coins for the year 1922. This pressure caused a lot of sloppiness in the production process. The belief is a pair of dies clashed with one another without a coin being in between the two dies. As a result, a mint employee obtained an old obverse die and filed it down in order to improve its appearance. But instead, the mint employee ended up filing the D mint mark too much, and in return, created the 1922 No D Lincoln cents. The 1922 No D Lincoln Cent has always been recognized as a major die variety. It is a variety not an error. This is a very popular coin in fairly short supply so it has always commanded a hefty premium. The 1922 No D Strong Reverse Lincoln is very challenging to acquire due to its high value in any grade and is considered scarce. It is believed that most of them have been certified since they command such high premiums. Not to mention the fake ones with the D removed after leaving the mint. Population records should provide a good idea of this coins true scarcity. Another variety is the 1922 Weak D which are less popular but still command a premium, just considerably lower than the no D variety. The third variety is the Weak Reverse. An authentic 1922 No D Lincoln cent will display very sharp details on the reverse unlike the additional two varieties of this year. A 1922 No D cent should have the second 2 stronger than the first 2. Also the word TRUST is sharply struck. There are additional diagnostics which differentiate the more expensive and popular 1922 No D Lincoln cents. Therefore, authentication is highly recommended for this variety.
I have the weak D variation, but the no D is likely going to be a bit much for me, so I'll have to drool over yours. Nice coin and write up. Just a slight correction, @Collecting Nut , I am fairly certain Peace dollars and double eagles were produced in San Fran and Philly as well, but because of the demand Denver was responsible for the cents.
I have no idea as I was strictly talking about the Lincoln Cent. I do know that Peace Dollars were minted at Denver, Philadelphia and San Francisco.
The reverse seems better than 25 but perhaps the net grade is very close. Lovely coin. Never seen one in person. Mine has a D.
It is my only one. Too many other coins I need or want to collect. So the few die marriages of this coin are easy to obtain but costly.
The reverse is actually pretty good. I don't want to take it out of the flip as I don't have that size to re flip it. And the photo through the flip is usually no bueno.
