I have a 2009 proof set and one of the pennies, quarters, and the sacagawea dollar have scratches on them. :desk: :crying: :headbang: Will this bring down the value? How major so the scratches have to be to bring down the value? Does anyone else have problems with scratches on their proof set?
First, you want to be sure that the scratches are on the coins and not the holder. If they are indeed on the coins, then that will likely bring down the value. All of my proof sets are immaculate. I hand-pick them just to be sure. However, there are many out there that are not. TC
The mint operates in a high volume business. Some mint sets have coins that somehow escaped inspection. This is not an uncommon occurrence either. My advice to you is to return your set and hope you receive a better one. Do this in the period that the mint specifies or you'll be stuck with this set. You are not alone, this has happened to me and I, fortunately fell in under the time limits.
....actually "this is not an uncommon occurrence" IT'S A BIG PROBLEM! and to think the prices went up this year! it is unacceptable that the quality of the product is terrible and that this product is being rammed down our throats. makes me think of the health care bill!
Is there any truth to the rumour that the US Mint just takes items that are returned and sends them back out to someone else? I did have one item I returned to them. I bought a 2008 US silver proof set for a friend of mine. Anyway, the presidential dollars were awful looking - in a silver proof set - They were stained really badly. Anyway, I sent it right back and they sent me a better set.:high5:
I do not have any inside information but my guess is that the Mint disposes of the poor quality coins (if THEY find them to be of poor quality). It doesn't make sense for them to send poor quality coins back out to another customer only to get them back as the shipping/handling costs add up. TC
I have a 2009 silver proof set with a scratch on the Kennedy. I was out of town on business and did not have time to look at my set till after the return privilege had expired. Kind of a bummer for sure. Just shows one can not assume anything
Excellent advice! I would do exactly that! This is not necessarily true; although you have to return it while the sets are still for sale. One can order a new set from the Mint and return the old one for a refund regardless of whether or not it is within the return period.
Mikenoodle, I like that idea of buying another set and returning the older one in it's place. But what happens if the 2nd set is just as bad.....? I guess it's send the second one back and if it comes back very good then refund for the very first one.:rolling:
