Pretend you are a TPGS grader...

I try to put every coin I grade at ICG under the scope looking for new, old, unusual things - even something common like a 1921 Morgan dollar obviously genuine and MS.

Looking for my own "award"...

I am pretending to look at this one as a TPG would (as one did) and agree it should at least get a details grade:

 

It should be a 98 code label...

 

This is just ONE of several reasons I do what I do and the way I do it here and in seminars. It has nothing to do with me because I know my limits and I am 100% comfortable in my shoes. There is absolutely NOTHING anyone can do to me on CT that would affect me at all (now that I use the ignore button to remove anyone I please);
EXCEPT when it is pointed out (thankfully) that I am in error and become:

Reason #3: I appreciate you guys and I don't want you to get "ripped" by any unscrupulous or ignorant person you buy coins from! In order to help prevent that from happening, you need to develop a "good eye." Unfortunately, you also need to become suspicious of everything AND TRUST YOUR OWN EYES - not something you are told. In this thread, I told you that an obvious raised die break was a scratch! You also learn better (in a twisted often slower rate) if you must work out the solution for yourself.

So, telling me what to do to suit how you think I should do things is great. I love suggestions and often I will change if it suits ME. However, badgering; corrupting the thread with jokes because that's all you have; or attacking me as a condescending know-it-all, etc. might not work out for you BUT I'll defend your right to post any way/what you wish.

 

As you most likely are aware...no one asked you for your help in learning how not to get ripped by unscrupulous/ignorant sellers. The reason I didn't ask you for help is because I think you are...oh never mind.

 

Maybe no one asked for his help because they didn't know how helpful it could be. Sometimes we don't know what we don't know.

Actually it should only be in ICG's counterfeit holder but is considered genuine graffiti- xf details in a 98 coded slab.

 

I don’t think Insider knows how destructive him methodology is. He has a few fanboys here, but his nasty, accusatory, caustic method actually shuts down communication. I had a couple of professors like him back in grad school. They were so busy choking on their own egos, that they did not realize that most of the lecture hall stopped listening, and fell asleep.

 

It's clear that some like Insiders teaching style and some don't.
To me, ticking off the class is not the best choice. It's up to the teacher to win people over to their way of teaching. Without that, the class and the teacher fail.

 

Thanks for your comment. There are all kinds of students and you can't please many of them, especially the losers. Teachers are human and each is different - some great, some not so good. A teachers job is not to make friends. They need to convey information. Many don't care if you learn or not or what you think of them. It's the students job to learn even with a sub par teacher. Or, folks can get out of the class like the fellow below. We didn't miss him.

When I was in school we had to take anything the teacher dished out in any way he chose. During introductions, the first ten minutes of the first day, I had a short, angry, red-faced Irishman ** rush down into my face that made me cry out of frustration as his increased when I continued to identify myself using my nickname which was not what he wanted to hear. We lost one guy the first week! I moved from my chair beside the wall (I was admitted into a full class at the last minute) into his now empty desk.

** One of the best teachers I ever had.

Firstly, because your opening premise that a grader faces philosophical choices for fairness, I believe is incorrect. It would involve only subjective analysis of the coin. Secondly, the treatment of your students. That is why I give you a fail. You yourself are a former student of mine so I hope this criticism wasn't painful. You learned to modify a photograph with lettering, numbers ect.. . from me. A comparison of the two teaching styles would be striking. ....martha

 

Wow, this one really went sideways...

But to the question, if I were a current TPG grader as I perceive many of them are I may not even had the time to consider whether the detail of your question is a scratch or a typical for the series/ variety die break. Maybe had the submitter paid for variety attribution I would have been able to spend a little more time on it. So the "scratch" would detail the coin.

The 1797 large cent I posted was scratched multiple times and may have caused the grader to focus on that detail and miss all of the others, as it is a counterfeit. And any time spent comparing it to a genuine example image should have caused the grader to take pause, which he probably didn't have the time for either...

[Self Edit] Now I was going to write that you had until tomorrow morning to stop hiding your identity from me and CT members before I deleted you from my sight so you could join my expanding list. Furthermore, any teacher I've ever had for coins or anything else is DEAD! Lucky for me, after writing you were a liar, I read your post again.

A young, former school teacher with excellent computer skills. The fact that I am totally ignorant with computers except for the on/off button means I am ripe for instruction in any way it is given and you are a gentle, patient teacher. Unfortunately, since I didn't learn to do it myself a few times with your help,

I'm not seeking anything. Like some drive by shooter, you made an accusation and are gone. That way there is no need to back up your post. Nevertheless, I made sure to leave you an example. I hope you decide to stick around as just another entertaining "foil" in my future discussions.
