Usually a high school experiment that got silver plated and released back out into circulation. Look up silver plated cents.

I also have a 1999 D planchet or penny gray in color and is larger than a normal copper penny. I would like to know is it worth anything?
No it is just damaged. the zinc coated cents can be enlarged by putting between two pieces of wood or leather and pounding with a hammer.
We’ll I guess I’m not the only one that found an 1999 silver looking penny. But why is it their only the 1999 date. And surely this isn’t the same coin that I picked up out of pocket change
